Additional Information

Limited 24KT SACD audiophile edition of this 1993 album from the Canadian trio. Counterparts was the 15th studio album by Rush highest charting album in the US, peaking at #2 on the Billboard 200 (only behind Pearl Jam's Vs.). The lyrics of Counterparts continue the trend of Roll The Bones with dark and emotional themes being the primary focus. Some songs are "heavy" sounding tracks like "Animate" and "Stick it Out", which topped the Mainstream Rock Tracks for four weeks in late 1993, becoming the band's fifth single to do so. "Leave That Thing Alone" earned a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental.

Or more like, what used to be my "foolish opinion" about this album. Initially--upon getting it--my first reaction was that this was Rush's weakest offering from the 90s & shunted it to the side in favor of "Roll the Bones." But--after revisiting it more than once in the past year or so--I've come to appreciate the brilliance & diversity of "Counterparts." Lyrically, I don't know if it's any more complex than any other Rush album of this time period--Professor Peart always has some deep & meaningful words in his lyrics & looking over the list of songs, these are mostly what would become the rarer Rush material; as far as songs that made it & stayed in their live set.

But, maybe that's the refreshing aspect of Counterparts--the fact that most of these songs have not been beaten to death on classic rock radio. All that aside, these are just great songs to listen to--"Double Agent," "Cut to the Chase," "Animate," "The Speed... Read more
Outstanding vinyl release. Super quiet, no warps, 200g. Sounds fantastic, far better than the CD. This album has grown on me and is truly closer to 4-4.2 stars. Obviously, it does not stand with the classics but it is better than Presto and Roll The Bones which both have some good tracks but suffer from tinny production on no bass. This is solid 90's Rush but not up to their pinnacle period of around 1975-1985. Getting rid of Rupert Hine seems to have had a positive influence on the production. As other have stated, this is a stripped down sound with no keyboards, and solid guitars. It does suffer lyrically in a few places. Still worth picking up the vinyl if you don't have it. I was also very happy with the Test For Echo vinyl and have ordered Vapor Trails Remixed as well.
Counterparts represents a better vehicle with inferior cargo - it is a vast sonic improvement over Roll The Bones and Presto with questionable lyrical content. Given that the views of love and relationships are much more mature and worthwhile than the ones found on their debut album, Counterparts is still one of Rush's weaker albums lyrically-speaking. However, there is no shortage of brilliance that has characterized Rush for four decades.

The SACD version of Counterparts is what one would expect from an SACD: high frequencies are cleaner, lower frequencies are punchier, and mid frequencies are unmuddied by the changes.

This version of Counterparts contains different mixes of each song. The most pronounced changes are found in Stick It Out, Nobody's Hero, and Everyday Glory. The changes have resulted in longer songs and slightly different arrangements in one or two sections. On the first listen, these changes struck me as unsettling because I am accustomed to...
