The DacMagic XS USB Digital to analogue converter (DAC)/ headphone amp is an instant upgrade to any computer's sound output. It connects quickly and easily to any USB port and allows you to hear your favourite music and movies with every drop of detail, exactly as the artist intended. Whilst your computer might be great for spreadsheets and emails, it's not at all that good at processing sound. That's why our engineers designed our award winning DacMagic XS to instantly upgrade the sound output from your laptop. Just plug it into the USB connection of your computer or Mac for incredible, detailed high resolution audio. DacMagic XS delivers up to 10 times more power than most laptop soundcards. The headphone output from most laptops only outputs about 15-20mW, meaning weak bass and a lack of depth. The DacMagic XS however can output a massive 105mW for proper depth and volume that will drive the very best headphone set ups hard, with detailed sound and amazing bass. The volume available is easily adjusted on the simple ngertip controls and an LED shows the sample rate, so you always know you're getting the right level of clarity and detail from your tracks. We know you won't want to be without it, so we machined the DacMagic XS's lightweight but hardwearing chassis from aluminium, for a total weight of just 100g.

I've burned this in for at least 10 hours. Running on Windows 7, using their USB 2.0 driver with ASIO4All I did notice an improvement in the sound quality (perhaps less "grainy" in vocals, maybe tighter and deeper bass) vs. their default 1.0 USB driver that runs without download install.
BUT still not up to the sound quality of my centrance dacport (original version, no longer manufactured). The dacport has zero digital grain, breathtaking vocals, great deep and controlled bass, and sweet highs, with little sibilance, etc, I have never heard a dac as good as the dacport although my musical fidelity comes close.
But in any event this dac comes reasonably close, at 1/3 the price. The base is almost as good, but there is more grain in the vocals than the dacport. Highs seem not quite as extended, cymbals maybe a bit more hissy than the dacport, and less real. "tone" to the cymbals. And more sibilance is noticeable in the XS. The dacport...
I want to preface by saying I bought this specifically to run with an old 1983 HH Scott Solid State receiver. I run my laptop through my tv pretty much exclusively nowadays as I no longer need it for work. My thought was that this would suffice as both headphones and older amps all work in Stereo, and while I was looking to improve overall sound quality, I was not willing to drop $500 plus on a traditional DAC so this seemed like a great alternative. I was pleased to find that not only is the signal more than powerful enough to drive the receiver, the sound quality was apparent right away when streaming from google music and VERY obvious when listening to hifi lossless files directly. As expected the sound through the headphones showed similar improvement. Honestly this review could easily be 5 stars for the value, but I had the benefit of listening to a similar Cambridge device that was significantly more expensive but also had a noticeable improvement in sound quality over this...
No more wrestling with sound cards. This is the way to go. Great sound, easy installation and excellent ergonomics and product build. The sound is outstanding, much louder, crisper and detailed than realtek on my motherboard and more cost effective and easier to manage than sound blaster audio cards. The Cambridge Audio DacMagic XS does get a little warm to the touch during operation and the first generation drivers are sketchy, so I stuck with the native Windows drivers.
