Nominated for a 2013 Spinetingler Magazine Best Novel Award
IN A CITY WHERE THE LINES BETWEEN RICH AND POOR ARE DRAWN IN BLOOD, THE TRUTH IS JUST THE LIE YOU BELIEVE THE MOST. As four-year-old Sunny Exley drowns in the icy waters off a luxury beach house, her father, Nick, smokes weed on the shore and her mother, Caroline, is lost in the arms of a lover. Hidden on nearby boulders, rent-a-cop Vernon Saul watches the child die and chooses to act only when it is too late.
In the days following Sunny's death, gutted by grief and guilt, Nick falls under the spell of Vernon who presents himself as a friend in time of need. When the sinister Vernon's true motives are revealed, Nick is drawn into a spiral of manipulation and murder that leaves him fighting for his sanity and his life.

Nick and Caroline Exley's child Sunny drowns in an ocean as her parents are absorbed in nouveau-riche trivial preoccupations. Vernon Saul, a former cop-turned-sin-eater finds a plate full, and he navigates through the many castes of South Africa's Cape Town like a puppet-master. When he puts himself into Nick's life, he starts a free-fall of unimaginable proportions.
I don't want to give away spoilers, or run you through the plot. It's a cleverly-designed obstacle course that brings the social strata of South Africa post-apartheid into desperate focus. It's the kind of plot you don't want to believe, but Smith gives you no escape hatch. His saturations go beyond the descriptive, into the minds and emotions of characters whose pain you don't have to imagine. It approaches the edge of fine detail, only to throw you back into a pulse-quickening action. The life of a successful tech savant and a recovering meth-head hooker stand side by side in the level of reality that exists...
I think this is the fourth or fifth book from Roger Smith that I read, and it certainly didn't disappoint: it delivers the correct mixture of suspense, rage and desperation that the others do.
Needless to say, by the end of the book, you end up hating all the characters: they are either weak, spoilt, violent, ruthless, unhinged, useless or cunning - or a combination thereof. Which, if one thinks about it, is exactly how humanity is.
Totally worth the read, kept me awake till early hours in the morning, just couldn't put it down, no matter how angry I got at the main character (Nick): I mean, how weak and useless can one get, despite all the wealth and talent? I was really looking forward to the moment he'd get slashed, maimed, shot, raped, whatever - whether he got what he deserved, I'm not going to say: you'll have to read the book to find out...
All of Roger Smith's books are so well written and so graphic in the portrayal of the underbelly of RSA. The characters are well portrayed, unfortunately, most without any redeeming qualities.
You read these books and sort of don't want them to finish, but at the same time, I always read something light after finishing one!
Read his books and spread the word - they are great stories!
