Entertainment Weekly Must List (Grade: A-)

Whatever you've heard about Caraval, it doesn't compare to the reality. It's more than just a game or a performance. It's the closest you'll ever find to magic in this world . . .

Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval . . . beware of getting swept too far away.

I’m a big fan of scavenger hunts—whether they’re about finding items or finding clues from location to location. Way back in middle school, high school, and into college, I created such games for my friends to play. I’m also a big fan of the current “Escape Room” craze—being locked in a room trying to solve all the puzzles and clues within an hour so you can literally escape. Haven’t created one of those yet, but I’m working on it.

I’m also a drama director, so I’m a big fan of people playing roles. If you can incorporate those roles into an interactive game—a murder-mystery dinner theatre, for example—all the more fun. During freshman orientation week at college, some friends and I wrote a three-day long murder mystery where other friends in our dorm played parts and received occasional info bursts as things were uncovered. I don’t remember if any of the incoming freshmen solved our... Read more
Overall Impression: It’s official, I have a new favorite book!!! I have been hearing amazing things about this book for MONTHS, and I’ve been so, so excited to read it. I was NOT disappointed. This book not only lives up to all of the buzz it’s receiving, it surpasses it. By far. There aren’t enough adjectives in the dictionary to describe just how gorgeous, enchanting, and just plain AMAZING this book is.

Even though it’s still 2016, and this book comes out in January of 2017, I’m very confident in saying this is going to be my favorite 2017 read.

Cover Rating: This cover is lovely and whimsical and matches the tone of this novel really well. I cannot wait to get my hardcover edition!

Swoonworthiness: There are multiple swoonworthy characters in this book, but “mysterious sailor” Julian certainly delivers in the romantic interest department. And the end of this book hints at yet another potential... Read more
I know Caraval has already received plenty of raving reviews, but I am happy to add to it! I really enjoyed this book. It was an extremely fresh and unique debut from Stephanie Garber. I think from the synopsis you can guess that Caraval is about a game- a twisted, crazy carnival-like game that becomes much more serious as the book goes on. Or does it? What I loved most about Caraval is that most of the time, I had no idea what was real and what was part of the game. To be honest, I’m still not sure! I applaud Stephanie Garber for immersing her readers in the game in Caraval as much as her characters.

We are first introduced to sisters Scarlett and Donatella who live on the conquered Isle of Trisda. The book opens with the letters Scarlett has written to Caraval Master Legend, the mind behind the famously magical game of Caraval. Scarlett is enticed by the promise of the magic in this game, and desperately wants to get an invite for herself and her sister. We also... Read more
