I'll be honest: I probably wouldn't have picked this book up if not for the Patheos Book Club.
That said, I'm glad it came my way. This book gave me some ideas for enhancing my own prayer life and could be a great gift for any number of people on my list.
There are a lot of books that will explain Catholic spirituality to you, but I especially appreciated the brevity in this one. The essays are easy to dip into and organized in a way that makes sense.
Did I mention that the essays are short? As in "read them while your husband is driving you down the road"?
But they are no less wonderful for their short copy.
For example, the essay on praying with images, in about 500 words, made me think about the plethora of Virgin Mary images and icons around my home in a whole new way.
You mean I could use those images to inspire prayer, as in intentional stopping-to-say-a-few-words-with-God? Maybe it's not earth-shattering for you,...
Catholic Spiritual Practices: A Treasury of Old & New
I love the format of this little book.
Catholic Spiritual Practices is a collection of essays describing various spiritual disciplines and practices, which can be helpful with a person’s development in the Christian faith. The format of the book is very easy to follow with the assorted disciplines grouped into three primary categories: prayer, care, and spiritual growth. The essays themselves are concise, but provide an understandable overview of each practice, their expected outcomes, and a high-level introduction or “how-to” so the reader can have an idea of how to participate in the practice. I believe the essayists and the editors have done an exemplary job of presenting such a rich collection of spiritual practices in a manageable and practical form.
If I were to offer any criticism of the book, it would be regarding the title. Not all of the practices included in the book are...
Catholic Spiritual Practices: A Treasury of Old and New Edited by Colleen M. Griffith and Thomas H. Groome
The great advantage of a collection of essays like these is that they reveal the both the meaning and practice of the spiritual practices in a concise manner. The disadvantage of this book and books like these is you only get a little taste of the subjects considered which only gives you an appetite to discover more works on the various subjects. Initially, what I really enjoyed about his book is that it illuminated some Catholic practices that I thought obscure from my Protestant understanding, or, I didn't really know how the practice connected to the concrete expressions of everyday faith.
Commenting on the modern disconnect between the terms `religious' and `spiritual' Colleen Griffith writes, "A spirituality that is disconnected from religious tradition is bereft of both community and history; it has no recourse to the benefits of a larger body of...
