October 11, 2012, marks the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. Perhaps more than any other event in recent years, Vatican II can define a generation, an attitude, an outlook, an understanding of both the Church and the world, perhaps even an understanding of faith itself. The Catholic Update Guide to Vatican II explores the world to which the council was reacting, the direction that changed the Church forever to be a sign of joy and hope, and how its spirit is very much a part of the Church today as Catholics continue to experience the implications of its teachings.

This book helped me to understand the changes that took place during and after Vatican II. I went to Parochial school and we were taught to just do and NEVER to question. This book helped a lot.
This concise little primer is packed with information on the Second Vatican Council, which took place from 1962 to 1965. The book, edited by Carol Kendzia, takes us from the pre-council stirrings through the immediate and long-term results. Each chapter is enriched with subheadings and questions for reflection.

Kendzia contrasts the years before the council ("Latin Mass, clericalism, a closed Catholic ghetto") to the post-Vatican II world marked by "participation in liturgy, parish collaboration, an openness to the world." She summarizes the Council's main documents, the...
For the past thirty years, nothing has said "Send quickly to the round file" quite like the Catholic Updates released by the former St. Anthony Messenger Press (now Franciscan Media). These handouts have been the loose-leaf catechisms of content-free RCIA and parish education programs. All too often, the authors are more concerned with promoting their own agendas than presenting what the Church teaches. That they've now been collated into a single volume doesn't enhance their appeal. Readers seeking to learn what Vatican II teaches should consult the documents themselves or a reliable guide like Alan Schreck's Vatican II: The Crisis and the Promise.
