I've been reading this series almost from the beginning, with only a few volumes having come out before my discovery. This is the first that I haven't read straight away, but I had to wait until I had the whole of this last portion in my hands. (Already, I'm well into Volume Twelve.)
In general, I still enjoy this series. It has moments and quirks that--admittedly--can irk me at times. Though, to put this into words and describe WHY that's the case, I'm not entirely sure myself. However, there are pieces that just feel OFF, be it pacing or plotting or characters.
That being said, the series is still super-fun, with new surprises and moments where it makes you "feel the feels." The art, too, is all sorts of wonderful, and I'll be curious to see what he gets up to next. (Honestly, I'll be up for the next series from the author, as well.)
Basically, if you've made it this far, you'll keep going because the series is not only almost over, but it...
John Layman continues to bring it in this penultimate volume. For the entire series, there have been two main arcs. One was resolved recently with the defeat of the "Russian Vampire." The other arc, and even more significant one, is the cause of the Avian flu and the fire writing in the sky.
There are a series of side stories and of course, numerous written gags on the fringes. They are much appreciated. Guillory's bright art adds to the offbeat tale in a wonderful way. The crux is Mason Savoy's desire to work with Tony Chu. Tony refuses because of their history and how Mason trained Olive for years behind his back. Their meetings here are difficult. Mason's commitment to the cause is admirable.
I expect that Layman will wrap this up fantastically in volume 12.
I started reading Chew after the first couple of volumes had been released because people were raving about it, and I don't regret it. The first half of this series was amazing, but the longer it's gone on, the more it feels like it's weird just for the sake of being weird. This is definitely a series you need to read everything in order, so if you're getting this, you should know what you're in for. All of that said, I just can't wait to see how it all ends.
