In the early '90s, Phil May and Dick Taylor of the truly amazing Pretty Things teamed up with one of the Yardbirds in Chicago to record a set of the sort of material that inspired both bands to form in the early '60s. This collection includes "Time Is On My Side", a nod to Dick Taylor's brief membership in the Rolling Stones.

Take a Studebaker add a couple of Pretty Things, a drop of YardBird, a little Canned Heat and throw in some Chicago Southside Sisters and you get Chicago Blues with a strong under currant of English flavor. On this disc, vocalist Phil May and guitarist Dick Taylor of the English band the Pretty Things got together in 1991 with Yardbird drummer Jim McCarty, Canned Heat bassist Richard Hite and Chicago's Studebaker John on rhythm guitar for a rockin' night of raw blues. The band doesn't perform anything new on the disc, sticking to covers of Bo Diddley, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed and others. But the performance is nothing short of excellent. The vocals of Phil May are top notch and Taylor's guitar screams and cries like he was born and lived his entire life in the blues club of Chicago. The backgound beat of McCarty's drums are locked tightly with Hite's base and compliments Studebakers guitar and harp to form an almost perfect back drop from which May and Taylor work their magic...
This is a great album, however, there is not a "Don't Start Cryin' Now (Part 2)". The track/time listings are correct up thru Track 7 "Time Is On My Side". Track 8 is not "Long Tall Shorty"; it is "Scratch My Back" @ 4:49. Install "Scratch My Back" after "Time Is On My Side", then continue on with "Long Tall Shorty" thru "Don't Start Cryin' Now", leaving the song times as are, that is, do not advance the times with the titles. Delete "Don't Start Cryin' Now (Part 2)", thus Track 15 will end up as "Don't Start Cryin' Now" @ 2:15. Bottom line...This disc does not have an unreleased "Don't Start Cryin' Now (Part 2)"!!! Bugger Bill.
I don't know where I've been for twenty years! I missed this release when it came out. It is a blues classic. Get it for no other reason to listen to the absolutely fabulous vocals by Phil May, guitar by Dick Taylor and harp by Studebaker John. I've played harp for forty-five years, and have listened to all the great amped harp players, and the blowing on this recording is nothing short of fantastic: so fluid, so powerful, so effortless. SJ is at the top of his game here. Oh, and the rest of the band is wonderful, too! It is a crime that this record is unavailable or so danged rare/expensive. It should be released immediately. It puts to shame most of the blues that is out there.
