THIS WORKBOOK FOR BEGINNERS contains the basic steps of Christian meditation, also known as the ancient practice of â€œinner silenceâ€, originally imparted by Jesus to his closest disciples. The product of four decades of comparative religion research and meditation practice, these pages are primarily based on the four canonical Gospels as well as the Old Testament. They are based on the assumption that to practice Christian meditation you do not need to change your present beliefs or specific religious denomination. In short words, the practice imparted in these pages is based on attaining a state of â€œinner silenceâ€ or â€œinner stillnessâ€, as stated by the German mystic and Dominican monk Meister Eckhart (1260-1327) who stated that â€œthere is a huge silence inside each of us that beckons us into itself, and the recovery of our own silence can begin to teach us the language of Heaven.â€

The early Christian ascetics known as the Desert Fathers practiced â€œinterior silence and continual prayerâ€, also known as â€œHesychasmâ€, which in Greek means â€œstillness, rest, quiet, silenceâ€. As stated by the 5th Century Egyptian monk and Desert Father Abba Poemen (340â€“450):
â€œIf you are silent, you will have peace wherever you liveâ€ and that â€œwhatever hardship comes upon you, it can be overcome by silence.â€

The Spanish mystic and Carmelite nun St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) openly admitted practicing what she called the â€œPrayer of Quietâ€, a voluntary state of inner silence and stillness in which God â€œbegins to give us His Kingdom on earthâ€: She described it as a â€œsupernatural stateâ€ in which â€œthe soul enters into peace, or rather in which the Lord gives it peace through His presenceâ€¦ In this state all the faculties are stilled.â€

And Mother Theresa, in the pages of â€œIn the Heart of the Worldâ€, also highlighted the importance conquering inner silence to fill our hearts with God:
â€œWe need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence.â€
