Sam Bledsoe prefers his reclusive existence. A one-man landscape business keeps a roof over his head and food on the table—and keeps his badly scarred face away from curious eyes. But when a woman faints on her way from neighbor Maggie Ross’s house, he doesn’t hesitate. He rushes to help while grappling with memories of the incident that burned him so badly.
Free spirit Becca Sweet is pregnant—and down on her luck. The father of her unborn baby showed his true colors when he showed her the door. The apartment she has lined up isn’t available until the first of the year, and with Christmas and a storm on the way, living in her car is no longer an option. Becca appeals to her no-nonsense sister for help, but Maggie, unaware of Becca’s pregnancy, chooses that moment to dish out some tough love.
When Sam comes to Becca’s rescue, their battered hearts collide. In a moment of holiday magic, they discover that Christmas hope applies to all, even to them. And will hope lead to love, the most precious Christmas gift of all?

This Christmas story is just the thing to kick your inner Grinch to the curb and put you in the spirit of the season. It's labeled as part of the Appalachian Foothills series and does feature some characters from Lynch's previous novels in that series, but it is a standalone story, so if you haven't read the other books yet, you can still read this one (and then go ahead--read the others!) Main characters are a single pregnant woman, newly free from an abusive relationship, and a soldier wounded in a suicide-bomb attack in Afghanistan who has his battle with PTSD to fight along with healing from his physical injuries. The only thing I didn't like about this novella was that it was a novella and not a novel!
This was a wonderful novella about what Christmas is really about. It starts out with Becca down on her luck at her sister's doorstep. It's weeks before Christmas and Becca is hoping that her sister Maggie will take her in. She's the black sheep of the family and she hoping that her sister would forgive her and help her. She has a secret and is in need of forgiveness and love.
Sam Bledsoe is a neighbor of Maggie's and when Becca faints in Maggie's front yard, he comes to the rescue. He is a veteran and has some medical knowledge. He helps Becca by being a friend and by hiring her. She helps him with his business and seems to understand his PTSD.
This story was a perfect novella for Christmas. It had all the right meanings that you want for a Christmas story and is what Christmas is really all about. And if your concerned about the story being to Christian in content, it was not to heavy. It had the perfect amount for this feel good story for Christmas...
Being cheap, er, I mean FRUGAL, I have to admit that my purchase of this book was based on the price and its stellar reviews. However, I got so much more and this book turned out to be a treasure of a bargain. Lynch is excellent at quickly making the characters and their activities compelling. I very quickly became interested in the tattooed black sheep of a young mother-to-be and the wounded warrior living across the street. The spiritual growth and trust of the characters was almost a secondary plot, though it was never overdone and always accurately reflected truth. I happened to be in the hospital with a family member as I was reading part of this book, which made it particularly meaningful for me. Even though this is the fourth in the series, it was the first I read and stood alone without gaps or puzzles. Later, when I read the rest in the series, I was delighted to meet some of the characters and learn more about them. I'm happy to highly recommend this book -- 5 stars!
