Additional Information

What does it mean to be “truly human?” In Christological Anthropology in Historical Perspective, Marc Cortez looks at the ways several key theologians—Gregory of Nyssa, Julian of Norwich, Martin Luther, Friedrich Schleiermacher, Karl Barth, John Zizioulas, and James Cone—have used Christology to inform their understanding of the human person. Based on this historical study, he concludes with a constructive proposal for how Christology and anthropology should work together to inform our view of what it means to be human.

Many theologians begin their discussion of the human person by claiming that in some way Jesus Christ reveals what it means to be “truly human,” but this often has little impact in the material presentation of their anthropology. Although modern theologians often fail to reflect robustly on the relationship between Christology and anthropology, this was not the case throughout church history. In this book, examine seven key theologians and discover their important contributions to theological anthropology.

While I have a background in theology, (M.Div) I am only just beginning to explore the area of Christological Anthropology. This book is the perfect introduction to the subject as it covers a wide range of theologians and gives exposure to a multitude of perspectives. As someone just beginning to get a feel for the discussion, I especially appreciated Cortez's choice to maintain focus and clarity, reducing (while avoiding reductionism) their contribution to the field to an easy to understand "theme" or thesis. While specialists on each theologian might wish to add more depth and nuance, I feel that Cortez is fair and accurate within the specific aims he sets for himself. He is sufficiently deep to offer real insight and enlightenment, but not so deep that he is difficult to follow. His "theme" for each theologian is never out of sight and he helpfully relates each section back the development of his thesis so the reader never feels lost as the chapter progress... Read more
Great overall on a up and coming subject.
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?) “Christological Anthropology in Historical Perspective” by Marc Cortez is definitely a keeper for me. Understand, of course, that I am not a theologian, an anthropologist, nor a clergy person. However, dating from my graduate school days, when I discovered the writings of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, at that time recently posthumously published, I have indeed been deeply concerned by questions of the interaction of religious belief and other areas of human knowledge. Subsequently, teaching high school chemistry in an era when the conflict between theories of evolution and “Creationism” became ever more heated and – usually – less rational, it became very important to me to develop my own understanding of the ways in which theology and scientific theory could be complementary rather than oppositional.

After receiving Cortez’s fascinating book, I’ll admit that I was at first disappointed, while scanning his extensive list of... Read more
