Additional Information

Is safety an illusion?

Endless solar storms have brought technology back to the proverbial Stone Age, but there’s still hope... CICADA, a scientific fortress built by Max Thompson and his team, has one goal: find a solution. But they'll need to hurry. Others are trying to force entry, and even more want to destroy them. Worse, an uncovered secret could lead to the end of all life. Humanity's fate may depend on CICADA’s success or failure. Praise for CICADA “Fast paced page turner.” “…I can’t immediately predict what will happen next.” “Couldn’t put the book down…” “…lots of action and more twists in the plot that will make your head spin.” “… a heck-of-a tale!” “…twists and turns no one could have foreseen.” “A perfect scenario for an all-nighter.” “…the ending will have you saying, WOW!” Movie Rating: PG-13 because of some violence and stressful SHTF scenes. Not recommend for any children under 13 and anyone with high blood pressure. You were warned!

Although I don't like it, I understand the trend of serializing fiction such as this: I expect cliff-hangers and having to wait for and purchase multiple releases. However, this novel didn't even try to come to some kind of intermediate closure; it almost seemed as if some pages were inadvertently deleted from the book. Even the final chapter felt unfinished.

Which is unfortunate, because, for the most part, the story is a fun read. It's just too bad that it was ultimately unsatisfying and frustrating.
I can't put my finger on why it bothers me so much that Max is so dedicated to the Kings. It has never been made clear to me why he would rather save them, than save his own life, call me a cynic - but otherwise I enjoyed this story, it's good as "end of the world" type stories go. Clearly there is more to come, based on the ending of another story I read in the Stone Age series. I don't think this book stands alone as the start of the Cicada Series, however, and reading the previous Stone Age books is important to grasping the story completely. I can't even remember who "Teacher" originally was from the first stories, so many characters! I'm am hanging on by the fingernails waiting to find out what happens next. Nothing like a great cliffhanger to end the story! :-)

I've enjoyed Mr. Banner's books. I think he needs work on some character building or dialog, for example, I liked the characters of Drs. Melanie and Carrington Reid (scientist), they had... Read more
A good read, but by no means 5 star. I don't get how this book received so many 5 star reviews. Maybe it's because I didn't read Stone Age or Desolation, but Amazon indicated this was "Volume 1" so I shouldn't have to. While all the 5 star reviews talk about reading those books, without them I can attest that the characters were not developed well and bouncing around from character to character was confusing. I also wish it was written allowing me to more easily visualize the environment. I love books that allow me to "be there". Unfortunately, it didn't hit the spot.
