I apologize for the length of this. There is so little user experience data online for this filter that I wanted to record all of my impressions for anyone considering a purchase.

Cobalt's big selling point is that the pump is external to the canister leaving more room for media. This is true as the canister is on the small side yet manages to fit four full baskets inside. But having an external pump has its disadvantages. The company recommends mounting the pump inside the aquarium for ease of use though external mounting is also supported. I went with external mounting for a cleaner look in tank but this was a decision I came to regret.

Let's start at the beginning with the first impressions. At $100, the unit is priced in the low-middle range as compared to the competition. The quality of the included items varies quite a bit. The canister itself is very sturdy with a solid feel and strong top latching mechanism. As mentioned the unit is quite compact. The... Read more
Okay, first off I'd like to admit that I just got into having fish 2 and a half months ago. I'm not a grizzled veteran by any stretch, but I research things like crazy. In that short time, I have had 3 filters. The first was a top mount Marineland. Worked fine, but was far too noisy as per people's reviews. The second was a SunSun canister filter. I was so excited about this one. After reading countless reviews and doing research on it, I thought this would be the one. I had read reviews of leaks but ignored them wanting to believe it was a couple of fluke filters or operator error. Well, It was great for it's water flow and awesome for being dead silent, but all the thing did was leak. It cost me a rug and countless aggravation leaking out over 20 gallons of smelly water over the course of the month I had it. Then, after more countess hours of research and review reading, I stumbled upon the Cobalt Aquatics Canister Filter. THANK YOU LORD!!!

Let me just say that the first... Read more
I have been in the aquarium hobby for more than 30 years and am a member of several aquarium and fish clubs. My role in one aquarium club is to assess aquarium technology and report my findings in formally written articles. I've set up 100's of aquariums over the years. Currently I am running 22 tanks sized between 20 gallons and 180 gallons, which are all running some sort of canister filter. Over the last few years I have used and rated at least 15 different types of canister filters. Suffice it to say, I know aquarium filters. Okay, enough with my ridiculous qualifications, it's on to the review.

The Cobalt EXT filter system has a lot of very good attributes. Cobalt’s big selling point seems to be that the water continues to flow even when you are cleaning the filter. Unless it takes an entire day to rinse out a filter and media, that feature doesn’t really count for much. Your fish aren't going to suffer from 15 minutes of no water flow while you... Read more
