Additional Information

Celebrated as the “King of South African crime,” Deon Meyer is a world-class writer whose page-turning thrillers probe the social and racial complexities of his native country. In Cobra, a famous English mathematician is kidnapped and his two bodyguards are killed at a guest house in the beautiful wine country outside Cape Town. It’s clearly a professional hit, and the spent shell cases offer a chilling clue: Each is engraved with the head of a spitting cobra.

Meanwhile, in the city, a skilled thief is using his talents to put his sister through college. But he picks the wrong pocket, grabbing the wallet of a young American woman delivering something very valuable and dangerous to South Africa. The thief not only becomes the target of the deadly hit man known as the Cobra, but unwittingly holds the key to stopping a deadly international threat. It’s up to Captain Benny Griessel and his elite investigation team to find the pickpocket and track down the Cobra as the novel hurtles toward a brilliant, heart-stopping finale on the suburban commuter trains. Cobra is a first-rate thriller from a writer at the top of his game.

Before commenting on the plot and writing I wish to offer some comments germane to the ebook version of COBRA. I found the e-book production quality of COBRA unacceptable. After so many years of ebook availability, I feel it is about time for publishers to overcome these seemingly trivial challenge First, the pages of COBRA are not numbered, so the reader is once again stuck with location numbers. . Secondly, there were a number of typos. One example - for some strange reason, any word beginning with "fl" seemed to be followed by a number of spaces and then the rest of the characters. So, "flat" becomes "fl at"; ditto for "fl ower" etc etc. In addition, there were other typos including missing spaces between words. Finally, and worst of all, the ebook version did not have line spacing between paragraphs when a setting changed within a chapter. On a number of occasions, I would be two or three paragraphs into a different scene before... Read more
I really love Deon Meyer's writing style. After each Benny Griessel book I just download the next one without even reading the reviews. It helps to be South African and to understand the culture, the undercurrents and the local vernacular thrown in. We live with the high crime rate, the corrupt government, the undercurrents of anger at BBBEE and the racism. Deon not only brings this home in the story, but throws light on the subject from different viewpoints, which goes a long way to helping us all to understand how others experience things.

There are a lot of questions around the political appointments in the Hawks at the moment, so it is really great to read what they are actually do. We all thought all was lost when the Scorpions were disbanded and replaced with the Hawks. It's good to get the feeling that the Hawks themselves worry about what the government will do with certain information and, even though it is fiction, to get the impression that not everyone... A wonderful read, difficult to put down - so I'm burning the midnight oil, reading at night until the book slips out of my hands and sleep overcomes me. So glad I had already just read "Dead before dying" and "Thirteen hours" for that way I can follow Benny Griessel's story at the same time as the story itself. Glad, too, that before that I read Deon Meyer's "Blood Safari", an apparent stand-alone that does have a link with "Cobra". But I do miss Mat Joubert - unless he turns up later on, as I turn the pages?! It's 15 years now since I visited my sister in Cape Town, so the geography of the place is hazy to non-existent, but this does nothing to take away from the fact that "Cobra" is a jolly good read!
