I generally approve of the grinder based on price and quality of the components but I am disappointed in the number of 5 star reviews. The reviews are skewed because the grinder was received for free or a discount. There are plenty of people raving about this grinder so I'll just provide my negative observations: - The rotating burr does not have a center support to keep it from wobbling about during grinding. This leads to inconsistent grind sizes and might lead to damage of the burr. This seems like an extremely easy and inexpensive feature to add to the design and I'm surprised it wasn't implemented in the product. - The nut that secures the handle comes loose during grinding. - The silicone sleeve on the base falls off easily. I like the sleeve to improve grip but it's not worth the effort when it falls off all the time. - It does take a long time to grind a useful amount of beans. This is my first burr grinder and I'm not sure if that is common for all...
Let me start by saying that I am a real paying customer. I bought this product because of the great reviews. There seems to be a lot of bribed reviews for this product which has undoubtedly skewed the ratings quite a bit. This grinder does the job, but it is very inconsistent and it is a lot of work to make enough grinds for just a single cup of coffee. I think the handle is about 2 inches too long. I understand the mechanical advantage that the long handle provides, but we're grinding coffee not cement. After damn near getting arthritis in my wrists and elbows, i decided to upgrade the grinder by attaching my handheld drill to the top bolt and doing it the 21st century way. (If you do this, make sure the U-shaped gear is locking the coarseness adjuster, failure to do so will send whole beans into the collector jar.) Hope this helps.
I honestly don't get the hype about this grinder. I have had it for 3 weeks now, and here is what I find wrong with it:
-Unless you're grinding very fine (espresso grind) the consistency is really horrible. I'm talking even when grinding as fine as table salt (which is what I shoot for with AeroPress, pour-over, Moka). Half of it is ground way too fine and the other half is way too big. It's easy to see why too, because the axle the inner burr is on has nothing to stabilize it towards the bottom (hence the need for second-party retrofits like this: http://tinyurl.com/3tkfzbv ). This means the only thing centering it is the beans themselves, once they start working their way through the burrs. Problem is, even the slightest pressure you put on the handle pushes the inner burr off center right into the outer burr. Hence the uneven grinding. This also heats up the burrs because rather than grinding beans, they're just rubbing against each other.
