Welcome to Babylon, a typical sleepy Alabama small town, where years earlier the Larkin family suffered a terrible tragedy. Now they are about to endure another: fourteen-year-old Margaret Larkin will be robbed of her innocence and her life by a killer who is beyond the reach of the law.

But something strange is happening in Babylon: traffic lights flash an eerie blue, a ghostly hand slithers from the drain of a kitchen sink, graves erupt from the local cemetery in an implacable march of terror . . . And beneath the murky surface of the river, a shifting, almost human shape slowly takes form. Night after night it will pursue the murderer. And when the full moon rises over Babylon, it will seek a terrible vengeance . . .

Cold Moon Over Babylon (1980), the second novel by Michael McDowell (1950-1999), author of Blackwater and The Elementals and screenwriter of Beetlejuice and The Nightmare Before Christmas, is a chilling Southern Gothic tale of revenge from beyond the grave that ranks among his most terrifying books. This first-ever reprint features deliciously creepy new cover art by Mike Mignola.

4.5 stars, rounded up.

Another incredible read from author Michael McDowell! A small town horror story that is truly horrific both in terms of what happens, and in the form that the vengeance takes...

The Larkin family has had a rough life from the day young Margaret and older brother, Jerry, lose their parents in a fishing "accident". They are then raised by their loving Grandmother, Evelyn, who struggles financially to make ends meet with their meager blueberry crop. Further tragedy strikes when Margaret is just fourteen years old. After that, things begin to accelerate against them drastically.

Who can attain justice when the perpetrator is "above" the law?

This story answers that question in a most chilling, visual manner--I found myself completely unable to put down this book even once during the last third of the narrative.

If you haven't already discovered this amazing author, I urge you to give him a... Read more
I read The Elementals first and LOVED IT, so that's a pretty big stick by which to measure Cold Moon over Babylon by. It is definitely the stuff of nightmares-- reanimated corpses, ghosts, etc...and all of that was great. My problem with the book was that I didn't find ANY of the characters particularly sympathetic. Not even the victims. Having said that, it was still a good read and I'd recommend it. I also wish the villain hadn't been revealed so soon.
I read this book back in the eighties in paperback. I was delighted to find it available through Kindle, with audio narration available. Michael McDowell created the greatest dark southern characters, and put them in the most delightfully macabre situations. His descriptions of the southern Gulf coastal area are so vivid you can feel the humidity and hear the mosquitos buzzing.
