Any time a shoe says both "Breathable" & "Water Resistant" I am skeptical. This shoe delivers big time! I live in the Pacific Northwest and hike often in wet, muddy conditions and this shoe GRIPS. I rarely ever have wet socks when I wear this shoe and here is the "kicker".
I have ONE FOOT. Balance, grip, performance is key for me and I recommend this shoe highly even for people with two feet.
I purchased these just before a week of day-hiking in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Their waterproof nature ended up serving me quite well, as we got caught in the rain and I stepped in a large mud puddle adjacent to a creek (the picture shoes the after effects). The insides stayed relatively dry. Overall, they were comfortable to wear all day and walk around in, whether it was on a dirt trail, a rocky trail, a boardwalk, or in town. The treads provided great traction on dirt and rocky trails, while the low-top nature made them more like sneakers (I didn't want the ankle support offered by traditional hiking boots). They were also quite comfortable for driving and traveling, abrogating the need to carry an extra pair of shoes with me.

I have worn Columbia boots in the past and I like the brand. I find them to be a good balance between quality and cost. These shoes are no exception. They felt great right out of the box. No need to break them in at all. I have narrow feet, so the narrowness (is that a word?) that others have mentioned actually works in my favor.
I have worn them on three hikes. One was four miles in steady rain. My feet were completely dry. Another was six miles with a 20 lb. pack. The trails were hilly with lots of tree roots and the boots did me just fine. They are a bit warm (due the waterproofing, I'm guessing), so if that bothers you, you may want to look at a non-waterproof shoe.
I'll be wearing these up to the White Mountains in a few weeks and will post an update then. Happy hiking!
