Their early stuff was like a raunchier Rolling Stones and their 1968 rock opera S.F. Sorrow inspired Pete Townshend to write Tommy . These UK stars never hit it big in the U.S., but should have; this 25-track CD rounds up UK hits like Don't Bring Me Down and Honey, I Need plus Defecting Grey; The Sun; Come See Me , and more!

I'll never understand why this excellent band never charted in The U.S.A., although they were quite popular in Britain, Australia, Germany, New Zealand and The Netherlands. The Pretty Things burst out in England in 1964 with the excellent singles, "Rosalyn", "Don't Bring Me Down", and "Honey, I Need". They sounded like early Rolling Stones with a hard-edged blues-rock vein. In fact, member Dick Taylor originally played with Keith Richards & Mick Jagger in the group Little Boy Blues & The Blue Boys, before the Stones. In 1965, I was in a record store when "Don't Bring Me Down" was playing and I asked the manager, "Who Is This"? I promptly gave him my $2.97 and ran home to put on their 1st L.P., "The Pretty Things". I remember playing it over and over and became totally hooked on their raw sound. All of my friends also thought their 1st L.P. was very good but when they tried to purchase a copy, the record store manager said that he only had received 2 copies and that he couldn't get any...
I think this is the best Pretties comp out there. It includes the best of their pre psychedelic material and it includes "Silk Torpedo." If you want to educate yourself about this band, this cd is for you. You also need the compilation of their"banana" period. Satisfying.
This CD is a good compilation of raw and unspoilt British R&B from the Sixties. If you like the early Rolling Stones or Kinks you will like this one. This is no music tailored for charts but pure early R & B,¨ This group is still going on tour with 3 original band members and the are still going strong after 45 years of making music sticking to their music which was way ahead of its time in the Sixties. The first part of the CD is undoubtedly better than the second one which is more psychelic music. Get this one and hear what Sixties Pop/R&B was all about
