Here, for the first time in a single box set, are the 48 CDs that make up Martha Argerich s recording legacy from 1960 to 2014 with Deutsche Grammophon and Philips, including the four Lugano Concertos CDs and the Chopin CD of 1960s radio recordings.
THE REPERTOIRE: With this box you can trace Martha Argerichs recording career from early Chopin, the famous Ravel and Prokofiev Concertos disc with Claudio Abbado, through her comprehensive series of chamber-music recordings with Gidon Kremer and Mischa Maisky, to the more recent live outings with Nelson Friere (a long-time partner) and Daniel Barenboim. On the way there is overwhelming Rachmaninov, a scintillating Carnival of the Animals, and many more.

PACKAGING / CONTENTS Fricsay-style box in special textured paper with an evocative sketch of Martha Argerich Original cover sleeves Introduction to the Edition New liner notes by Gregor Willmes (attached) 150-page booklet with a magnificent series of specially commissioned sketches of the artist by Fred Münzmaier.
THE ARTIST: Acknowledged the world over as one of the greatest, if not the greatest living pianists, Martha Argerich goes from strength to strength as a performer, and can look back (if she cares to) on a career with DG and Philips that comprises one iconic recording after the other. Her essential legacy is with our two labels. If the solo recordings are relatively few in number each a gem, from Chopin to Ravel and Bach and Schumann her partnerships with the great artists of her time are unrivalled. One only has to think of Claudio Abbado, Nelson Freire, Gidon Kremer and Mischa Maisky, and more recently Daniel Barenboim.

I already owned about half of these recordings including all of her 1960's and 1970's legendary recordings, but this purchase was a budget way to get all the extra chamber music and more recent live recordings. What more is to be said? Universal Music's (Deutche Grammophon, Philips, Decca) original releases of one of the most fiery and sensitive pianists of the 20th century at a bargain price! You don't get EMI/Warner's recordings but there are only a few from EMI worth having. Most of the albums were recorded in the digital era (post 1982) but her most famous recordings are analog 1960's and 1970's. Sound quality is top notch for stereo recordings of that time. The artistry is sublime.
I agree with the other reviewer that the packaging is cheap. The print on the back of the sleeves is sometimes so small that you need a magnifying glass to read it. What do you expect for the price? The only major flaw is that artwork/cover on CD 11 is incorrect. The CD includes a...
Exquisite playing by Martha Argerich. Those who know her musicianship and expertise at the keyboard are aware of how wonderful is her playing. It carries one away to another realm. Her virtuosity is transcendent and nearly flawless. It makes me ponder the question, "How can anyone be so awfully good?" The CD's come in thin envelopes with reproduced covers of the original albums. The recording quality is good. The music is beautiful and moving. The box is compact and the cover easily slides back into place. This is a bargain as are many of the reissued box sets. Miss Argerich is one of those rare musicians who stand out even among the greatest of them. There is not much else I have to say. I am more than satisfied with this purchase knowing that I will derive many hours of listening pleasure from it.
Argerich is one of the greats. But she picks some things to record that are not on the beaten path. I find her set fascinating, but I am an amateur pianist. Tops: Schumann, Chopin and a really nice 4 handed piano version of the Nutcracker.
