I cycle 10,000 miles a year and I don't like fixing flats, especially if I'm near the end of a 200 mile ride. I have been riding Armadillo tires a lot recently but the Specialized web site started giving me grief so I thought I'd try these Gatorskins which have a similar flat-proof reputation. I have several hundred miles on them now and I've had no flats yet.
They went on easily (thumbs only) but I have no idea how hard they are to remove because they haven't flatted yet. They're fairly slick but I've had no issues with grip even in the rain. I think I'm going to like these.
Update: It's nearly the end of April and I've ridden 2000 miles on them - no flats so far!
3000 miles and my first flat but it was a roofing nail which would have flatted my truck tire so it doesn't count. Keep rolling!
Final Update: 4500 miles - one flat from a roofing nail - starting to wear out on the rear wheel. I'd say I got my money's worth! Time to buy another...
These are a very good tire for my commute to work over some gravel, streets and beat roads of New England. Last thing I want is to change a tire at 5 AM on the ride to work and these have kept me for doing so so far. Good traction on wet roads and sandy edges.
NOW THE UPDATED STORY
After 60 miles the bead separated from the sidewall of the tire. Continental said sorry we have a 1 year warranty but we don't cover road hazards. This wasn't anything I hit if it was I wouldn't waste my time updating my review from a 5 to a 1. I will provide pictures to anyone who wants to see what this company is like.
The front tire shows no sign of wear and Continental did replace this tire after talking with supervisor of person who answered phone. So updated rating from 1 to 4 stars.
I ride fixed in an urban environment and was infuriated with constantly having to deal with small pin-hole flats. I eventually had to start carrying around a flat-repair kit in my bag (patches, tube, levers, mini-pump), which definitely helped in terms of not getting stranded, but it was still a hassle having to take 10-15 minutes out in public fixing a flat or two a week, plus the weight of all the extra kit.
After doing some research on puncture-resistant tires and asking around town I finally decided on the Gatorskins and I have to say I love 'em. The day after I put them on I had to do some riding around town and after all the snow we've had recently the roads have been in less than stellar condition. In addition to the ubiquitous threat of broken glass, I also was dealing with tons of gravel, pot-holes, and left over road-salt, conditions where, with my old tires I'd have flatted out no question. The Gatorskins took these conditions like a champ and provided better...
