First, this is not worth $50 at all.

The toy does not look like the picture--it is painted a light gray with very dark gray squares (aztec-ing) all over it. There is too much contrast between the two colors, making it look like a mottled mess.

The picture shows the ship as it should actually be--light blue with a SLIGHTLY darker shade of aztec-ing.

Other than the paint scheme, the model is made of heavy plastic, and is quite nicely detailed. It's a shame they picked the color scheme they did; if the colors were correct this would be beautiful.
As a Trekie I wanted this as a desk toy. Sadly it is not quite what is claimed. The saucer section is plastic, not die cast, and the whole thing is a dark gray color with little white squares all over it. Maybe my TV doesn't work right, but the Enterprise-D always looked to be white to me
I too will agree with the previous reviewers and say that the color scheme is not terribly accurate, and that some shapes and proportions are off ( This was also true of the Corgi NCC-1701 ). But I will add that if you look at the large filming model as it was repainted for the feature film "Star Trek - Generations", with a darker overall color scheme and more weathering, then this model's paint job becomes just a BIT more acceptable.

Tis a shame, however that only a few parts on this are actually metal. I understand the weight issue ( particularly with the flimsy stands provided, although that could be remedied with a different stand design ), but the Corgi original series NCC-1701 companion piece was made nearly entirely out of metal and feels far more sturdy.

I remember the days when a toy adverstised as die cast metal really WAS die cast metal, but for what it is, it's okay. I just wouldn't pay more than $20.- $30. for it.
