I don't know how many times I've wished for this exact book. Recognizing that something is missing in my writing but not knowing where to turn has been frustrating. Well, Angela Hunt has provided the solution! I read and applied Volume 1, The Plot Skeleton, all in one morning. Applying Extraordinary Characters is going to take longer but I now have more ideas and excitement about my current project than I ever dreamed possible.
Thank you, Angela Hunt! I hope many more such volumes are in the pipeline.
I have not yet finished the whole book but I've already gotten so much out of it. Her "quick" method of coming up with characters was a revelation for me. I've also read Create a Character Clinic by Holly Lisle (which is also very helpful) but this helped me add the extra depth I felt my characters were lacking. I am not a particularly social person, so I struggle coming up with believable characters. Hunt's method really works well, better than I would have thought when I read how to do it. I felt like what I had before I read her book was a quick character sketch, somewhat vague, and her method was like waving a magic wand that brought them to life and then they sat and told me about themselves! They came to life, I could see how they would interact, and what they told me confirmed what I already knew about them, even though I came up with my original sketches before I read Hunt's book.

I absolutely love books, movies and TV shows where the characters are well-drawn and... Read more
I think there is something of value in any well made writing book. Even if it is rudimentary and for the novice. Sometimes it's just good to refresh what you already know. One of the best pieces of sound advice I have ever heard was a quote by Einstein. When asked why he had to look up his street address it is said he claimed, "Why would I litter my mind with information I can look up?"

So it is with this book, and all in the series. They have something to offer. A plan. A road map. The first step in 85000 words and a The End.

You won't walk away with a college education in creative writing. But that isn't what is promised. These books are to get you to think about the road map to writing the novel. The first few steps. Or, being shoved out of the airplane as you white knuckle the rip cord and scream Geronimo.

Is it the end all, be all? Nope.

But it may be just the right kick in the pants. And a little reference material in the event... Read more
