Additional Information

In Cruise Confidential, Brian David Bruns spills the dirt — or in this case, the dirty water — on those romantic, fun-filled vacations at sea. His hilarious chronicle of the year he spent working for Carnival Cruise Lines takes readers down into the areas where the crew works and lives, leaving readers gasping with laughter as they’re assaulted nonstop with events that range from the absurd to the utterly bizarre. Stewards fighting over food. Cutlery allowances and other nonsensical rules. What the crew calls those onboard (no, it’s not “passengers”). And of course, the sex. An abundance of ready, willing, and able bodies eager for action on a vessel replete with nooks and crannies leads to love in some mighty strange, and seemingly impossible, places. Breezy, entertaining, and informative, Cruise Confidential is essential reading for those planning a cruise or for anyone who just needs a good laugh.

You should always beware of a book with four titles. It should send up a red flag that no editor of substance was involved with the work in question. And indeed, I'm not sure what editor would have allowed this racist, misogynist, Mary Sue of a story to come to fruition.

The story boils down to the following: Cruise workers go to parties, drink, vomit, have public sex, pass out. Rinse and repeat. The descriptions of the parties are no more detailed or titillating than the 22-year-old at work who clumsily describes his Saturday evening. The "love story" at the heart of the tale is lifeless and incomprehensible.

I can only hope that the author himself is not as racist and misogynistic as his literary counterpart. I have a high tolerance for offense, but his repeated descriptions of a black man as a monkey and mocking his ape-like appearance and behavior was downright indecent.

Though the author was purportedly enduring his employment for love, he wastes... Read more
Interesting book about life on Carnival Cruise ships. I've been on several Carnival cruises and can say without a doubt, the things described in this book do happen. On my last cruise, there was a young lady I met. Her only goal on the ship, seemed to be to get laid every night with a different guy. She was seen by me and several of my friends with one of the employees that worked in the Fun Shops. We thought it was funny, because it was pretty obvious that they slept together on several occasions. She had bags under her eyes the next day and looked wore out, lol. Then at one of the ports, they were seen together going on an excursion off the ship.

The book itself is just like what I saw on my previous cruises. Crew and shipmates mingling with guests. The book goes on about the club scene down under the guest decks. Although I have not seen the parties below deck, the crew does occasionally make it up to the regular bars and do mingle with guests. All in all a great read... Read more
Boring -- I mean, seriously, how could this book be so boring? But it is. Rather than giving a behind the scenes look at what it is like to be a cruise employee, its purpose seems to be to stroke the author's ego. All we hear about is how sexy he his, what a good guy he is for not cheating on his girlfriend, and how much harder he works than anyone. Of wait - there is more - I almost forgot: he can drink a lot too. Guess what? Staying faithful isn't that big an accomplishment, nor is getting stupidly drunk every night of the week. On top of all the ego stroking, the book isn't even well-written. It's taken me months to finish it because I keep putting it aside and moving on to better quality writing. Don't waste your money or your time on this one.
