I have two DeWalt 3-speed driver and hammer drills that I have used for years. I also have two Milwaukee high end 18v drills and two Makita 18v drills. When I opened the case and checked the drill the battery was loose. I tried the second battery and it was not tight either. Having a loose battery pack that slips around is annoying and a design defect. I was able to apply two pieces of plastic electrical tape on each side of the battery packs to achieve a snug fit (not needed with Milwaukee, Makita, or even Black & Decker batteries that slide in like this).
Having three usable speeds with the gearing provided by DeWalt makes a tremendous difference in performance. I use the middle speed range with 4 to 6 inch Mega TCT hole cutters to cut through 1-inch or thicker subflooring and it works great. With Makita or Rigid or Bosch or Milwaukee or Panasonic drills I own I would have to go to the low speed setting and performance would suffer.
This is a really good drill. I'm mainly using it for automotive work (complete restoration, replacing parts and body work) as well as other odd jobs. I don't plan to do any masonry work that would involve a compact drill, so I opted to not get the hammerdrill version. This one is shorter and therefore better for my kind of work. I'd previously been using a very cheap Ryobi 18V that was at least 5 years old when it caught fire. Not a knock on Ryobi, but it was time for a new drill and battery kit. Although it probably isn't most logical reason, I went with Dewalt because of their "Made In USA*" campaign. Glad I went with it though. It has enough power and battery life that I haven't reached for my corded drill once so far.
Dewalt's "20V" system has been out a while now, so there are a lot of tools available for a reasonable price. The only overpriced part are the batteries, but hopefully they will come down in price soon. The different led settings on this...
At first, I thought "This costs as much as the combo kit with the impact driver." Then, I dug a bit deeper. The combo kit comes with two 3 Amp-hour batteries. This comes with two 5 Ah batteries. That two-thirds more run time. I bought this and bought the 20V, brushless impact driver separately. I love them both.
