Danca Das Cabecas shines as one of my top five titles in the ECM catalog along with Jan Garbarek's AFRIC PEPPERBIRD, Steve Tibbetts' EXPLODED VIEW, Ralph Towner's SOLSTICE, and Chick Corea's RETURN TO FOREVER. It's tough leaving out something from John Abercrombie, leader titles from Eberhard Weber and Terje Rypdal, something from Barre Phillips or Steve Reich, and even something from ECM's cash cows, Pat Metheny, Gary Burton, and Keith Jarrett. Gismonti at his best!
This album is an ASTOUNDING exploration with unforgettable imagery from two world-class artists. Born
in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1947, Egberto Gismonti recorded "Danca Das Cabecas" with Nana Vasconcelos
when he was thirty-two years old. He had become fascinated several years earlier with a Brazilian form
of popular music known as "choro", which features different types of guitars. To play this, Gismonti had
to learn to play the guitar, first on the 6-string classical guitar, and then on the 10-string in 1973. For
the next two years, he experimented with various tunings along with exploring new sounds. He was also
attracted to Ravel's style of orchestration and chord voicings. Before "Danca", Gismonti had written for
and conducted the Orquestra Sinfonica de Rio de Janeiro, as well as recording several albums in Brazil,
France, and Germany. One of the most staggeringly, hauntingly beautiful recordings ever made on this
planet, "Danca Das... Read more
