Almost one in five near-death experiences are not peaceful suggestions of heaven. In a wide-ranging and far from gloomy look at "the other near-death experience," Nancy Evans Bush gives the first comprehensive look at a fascinating but neglected topic: NDEs and deathbed visions of fear, emptiness, and even hell.
A wonderfully readable book, grounded in thirty years of experience and research, Dancing Past the Dark: Distressing Near-Death Experiences is packed with first-person accounts, engrossing discussion and factual answers to a myriad of questions, both religious and secular, with practical suggestions for integrating such an experience or encountering one as a caregiver. Here are ways of thinking about the subject that will be new to many readers. What becomes evident is that to see these only as a terrible threat about death is largely to miss their point.
"...absolutely enthralling--literary, adventurous, incisive, informative and smart." ~Steve Volk, Fringe-ology
"The book is an outstanding piece of work. It is a wonderfully comprehensive and rich history of what can be known and what might be considered about NDEs [and] bursts with anecdote and commentary, reinforcing for the reader that there is always another way to see things." ~ Wayne Rollins, MDiv, PhD, Soul and Psyche, Jung and the Bible, and other titles
"Dancing Past the Dark is what we have all been waiting for... a must for any experiencer of...any type of encounter with the numinous. ~ P. M. H. Atwater, LHD, Near-Death Experiences: The Rest of the Story
"A valuable contribution to the NDE literature and engagingly written. It needs to be seen and read by the wider public." ~J. Harold Ellens, MDiv, PhD, Understanding Religious Experience; Miracles: God, Science and Psychology

Now, the review...
Dancing Past the Dark: Distressing Near-Death Experiences is important, because terrifying and hell-like near death experiences are as "realer than real" and ineffable as the blissful ones. They are also more common (up to one in five) than we may like to admit.
At the end of the day though, this is not a book about distressing and hellish NDE's. It's a book about the totality of spiritual experience itself. Here, Nancy Evans-Bush shines light...
Life is busy and it seems like the opportunity to read new books on spirituality and specifically near-death experiences is growing beyond the reach of most busy folks. That said, this is a book that I would put on the "do not pass it up" list. No matter what you feel you may know about the subject of NDEs, this is an advanced text on the subject.
I state the above after over 25 years exploring this subject. Having met hundreds of near-death experiencers; having read thousands more accounts including NDE books en masse plus years of academic journal submissions and reviews; and having dealt with my own experiences of a non-ordinary state of consciousness, I can firmly assert that this book deserves a preeminent position regarding specifically the topic of near-death experiences and in general it offers significant advances in comprehension of human psychology and the inevitable interconnection with the topic of spirituality.
Humanity is standing at the crux of a dilemma- do we continue our path, where materialistic science clashes endlessly with mythic religion? There must be another way- a way in which the rational mind is married to the mystical experience of reality.
Without depending on outworn ancient creeds, or shallow modern reductionism, we can do our own detective work, both empirically from without and experientially from within, through meditation perhaps. The former way is greatly enriched by the study of the NDE, the near death experience. Despite the best efforts of Scientism to reduce consciousness in general and the NDE specifically to mere 'brain function', the 'floating soul' of the NDE refuses to be shot down. There are many good book making this case, by Chris Carter, Jeffrey Long, and Pim Van Lommel, for starters. Many of these books make great points as to the true inexplicable nature of these events, but they fall short when it comes to the 'dark side' of the...
