I've had these in various sizes, from a tiny fountain pump to the 1800 gph, all the same simple design. They have gotten rather pricey but you do get a rugged, reliable pump for your money. They work well, are surprisingly small (but heavy), and last a long time if you 1) always use a pre-filter of some kind, 2) keep the pre-filter from clogging, and 3) never forget to clean the impeller before storing the pump (see below). My only and very slight criticism of the Pondmaster 1800 is that the discharge is rather small for a pump of this flow rate.
If you shut down your pump for the winter make sure to disassemble and clean it: Remove the impeller housing, carefully pull the impeller out of the motor (it's held in the motor magnetically so you need to pull it out firmly) and clean everything carefully so there is no grit or pond crud on the impeller or inside the motor housing (I use a tooth brush). Neglecting to clean it can result in the pump binding up just long enough...
I bought one of these that broke after one season and was returned under warranty. The replacement pump also broke at the start of the second season so I bought the replacement impeller kit which was the item that broke. That lasted only 4 months. I have a 1000 gallon pond in the northeast and run this for 8 hours each day for 7 months before it's removed and stored in the basement.
Each time, the problem is with the ceramic bearing in the base. After several months, it loosens and begins to rotate along with the impeller. This gouges out the bearing seat and causes the impeller to rub against the sides of the base and finally breaks the ceramic shaft of the impellor. The base bearing cannot be removed so the pump is now useless.
Although it has only one moving part, that part is a huge problem. Two pumps, same problem three times.
I've been purchasing pumps for my pond for many years until I found this one! It was a hassle to constantly readjust pump settings with every new pump I had purchased as these pumps don't last forever and manufactures don't use the same inlet diameters or tubes. But now the ONLY thing I've had to replace is the impeller which is why pumps end up failing in the first place, and other pumps you cannot replace this part alone. So I've purchased a few spare impellers, and they are very easy and cheaper to replace. I keep the same pump setting and I've only had to replace the impeller once thus far in the 2 years I've had this pump. And I think it was my fault. I could've extended the life of it had I kept the filters clean. I've read some reviews that the prefilter melts, deforms or looses it's shape. Yes, it does! But this does not justify lowering the rating of this pump. Mine lost its shape, but functions just fine. Who cares! It's under water!! The key issue you need to keep...
