I ordered my regular size, 13EE, the first time and it was a bit short. That may have partly due to a fold in the lining/insulation in the toes, a defect in my opinion. I returned them and reordered one size up. The 14EEs are perfect, and will allow me to wear a heavy sock if I want to. The sole is a modest Vibram which should be better than the air-bobs on my old Danners. They are a bit heavy, but considering my size, the soles and the amount of insulation, not overly so.
This last is better for duck-footed guys like me than the regular stitch-down Danner type. I strongly recommend reading the fit guide on the Danner site before ordering and allowing time for returns and break-in.
At my age, this may well be the last pair of hunting boots I buy, and I'm very pleased with my choice.
After wearing them for a bit, I have a couple of observations to add. First, as others have noted, no break-in has been required. They were comfortable from the very first...
So, these are obviously good boots. You can tell the moment you pull them out, that they are high quality. I'll get my one complaint, and reason for 4 in stead of 5 stars out of the way now. The design of the heel on the inside of the boot seems to be a bit off. I find that if I'm not wearing super thick socks, my heels slides a bit inside the boot. I know what you're thinking, the boot is too big, but that is not the case. There is like a weird gradual slope going from the floor of the boot to the vertical section in the back. I'm not sure if that makes sense ans I feel like I'm spending a ton of time explaining a minor thing. But that minor thing comes into play, especially on long walks. I do a lot of upland bird hunting and after hours of trudging around, i always get small surface blisters on the back of my heels. For other general use and work, they are perfect though.
I'll add another point. No one will admit it, but I'll come out and say it. I want my boots to look...
I bought these boots to replace the uncomfortable, low-end hunting boots I've been wearing for 6 years. Unfortunately, even though I got the right size, the boots didn't work for me. They were extremely stiff out of the box and no amount of "breaking in" around the house softened them up. Their lack of flexibility forces you to always walk flat footed. This is not a good thing when you're hiking up and down steep hills and need the boots to bend. Several grommets also created very painful pressure points. The insulation, one reason I wanted these boots, was outstanding but I would never be able to wear them in the field so I sent them back and got a quick refund (minus a restocking fee, which I didn't appreciate). They look cool though...maybe they'll work for someone else's feet.
