I first purchased the Corsair K70 (MX Brown), but it was not nearly as comfortable to type on, presumably because of the raised keys. This Das is what I expect a high quality keyboard to feel like. No, the switches are not Cherry MX but to me, it is very hard, if not impossible to tell the difference. If you bottom out, the keys do have a slight springy ringing sound to them that sounds kind of cheap and might annoy some people (you have to listen very closely). I did not notice this on the Corsair, but I imagine this could be easily remedied by adding rubber O-rings to the keys. Overall, this is very quiet compared to the Corsair out of the box.
Love the fact that this doesn't have a num pad. For programming, this makes it much easier, quicker and more comfortable to move between keyboard and mouse. One thing this keyboard seems to be missing are dedicated volume and media control keys that are pretty standard on most keyboards these days. You have to do fn combos to...
First off, the descriptor of "Compact" is a bit of a misnomer here. Yes, there is no numpad, but the keyboard is still as wide as or wider than your average laptop, and it's got a pretty significant heft to it. Of course for a mechanical keyboard, that's a good thing. The old rule about camera tripods works here as well - you don't want to use something that you can't beat a man to death with. This particular Das Keyboard model is nice and chunky and heavy, and feels extremely stable on your desk.
The most important part about a keyboard review is the question, "How does it type?" Quite well, I'm happy to report. I type faster and more accurately with this than I have with any other keyboard I've used. The mechanical switches have tactile and audio feedback, so the sound and feel ends up training you to type faster. Your fingers learn exactly how much effort they need to push down any given key over time.
This keyboard can best be described as the Ultimate bait and switch. The Das Keyboard 4 Ultimate was a work of art; elegantly designed and the most delightful feel of any keyboard I have ever used. I initially purchased this keyboard with the belief that I would have the same experience with a slightly smaller form factor (I have a small desk at my house), however within typing my first words I noticed that it was not even close to the same experience that I had with my Das Keyboard 4. It feels like a cheap knock off compared to the 4.
I agree with many of the other reviewers out there, the keys feel more scratchy or muddy, less the delightful click when pressing an authentic Cherry switch. The other thing that grinds my gears about this is that they clearly are attempting to deceive their loyal customers, by putting a switch that costs significantly less and switching out the Cherry they have no doubt reduced their manufacturing cost but have completely neglected to...
