A NEW NOVEL IN THE NATIONALLY BEST-SELLING RCN MILITARY SF SERIES!  Leary and Mundy are back in another military science fiction adventure as they undertake a mission to a distant but critical star system.

Captain Daniel Leary thinks that his marriage will allow him to slip into the quiet role of a naval officer in peacetime. His friend, the spy and cybrarian Adele Mundy, is content to be collating data in her library. But high officials of both superpowers are involved! Those who want Daniel and Adele to become involved in the Tarbell Stars claim that only they can prevent a war between the Republic of Cinnabar and its great rival, the Alliance of Free Stars. The conflict is political, but at the sharp end it means blazing warfare and cold-blooded murder. Daniel and Adele will be at the sharp end.

The odds in ships and guns are badly in the enemy's favor. Daniel, Adele, and the crew of the Princess Cecile will do everything humanly possible, but that may not be enough against an enemy battleship. And even if Daniel and his companions succeed in battle, they can't be sure whether their employers really wanted them to win—or whether they even want them alive. All they can do is to race forward, hoping to come through into DEATH'S BRIGHT DAY.

This is the twelfth book in Drake’s RCN (Republic of Cinnabar Navy) series, featuring Daniel Leary (now a Captain) and Adele Mundy as the two central characters. As the book opens Leary and his fiancée Miranda Dorst have just tied the knot and are heading for the reception at Chatsworth Manor, the Mundy townhouse owned by Adele. Leary has been renting a suite of rooms there for the relatively few times he finds himself in the Cinnabar capital of Xenos. (While Leary and Adele are both POV characters, and close friends, there’s no romantic attachment between them. Adele isn’t interested in that sort of thing.) In the course of the reception Leary is approached by a senior officer in the RCN and asked to hire himself and his corvette (his personal property, not the Navy’s) out to the rather weak government of the Tarbell Worlds, which is facing a rebellion by a group apparently sponsored by elements of the intelligence service of Cinnabar’s rival, the... I have been a follower of the RCN series, by David Drake, since its inception back in 1998 in "With the Lightnings." Over the, now, eleven books the characters...originally well set out... have gained that inner reality we care about and can relate to on a personal basis..
Drake could not write a bad book and this is no exception. The plot of this is...who can we trust? Sent on a mission to deal with skulduggery in a far off sector of the universe, they are thrown upon their wits to resolve the difficulty without restarting a war with the opposing government. The last war, recently ended in a fragile truce, almost bankrupted both combatants and would have brought chaos to the planets under each government.. Daniel Leary and Adele aided by Hogg and Tovera endure the ongoing treachery to resolve the situation in a way that makes a war unlikely...from this particular cause!
One of the few series I have retained in hard cover, The RCN series is a treasure to reread.
Another fine adventure with Captain Daniel Leary & Signals Officer/CyberLibrarian Adele Mundy. SF Space Military Navy Fiction at its best. Every book of this series has been a rousing adventure read. Full of politics and military tactics that portray human affairs which have not changed in thousands of years! I highly recommend anything written by David Drake!
