At Least One in Every Three U.S. Workers Is An Underearner
Underearning crosses all salary levels: whether you are making minimum wage or pulling down six figures annually, you may be an underearner—someone who earns far below what your abilities, skill set, potential, or job and title should command. The majority of underearners do not bring home enough to meet their monthly obligations, let alone build a future. Many have debt and most have no savings, investments or retirement plan.
Overwork to the point of exhaustion.
Volunteer their time when they can barely pay their bills.
Are lousy negotiators.
Have a high tolerance for low wages.
Daydream about a better future, but do little to create one.
Delusions of Mediocrity pulls back the curtain on underearning. Taylor uses her own life as an example, showing how the issue goes far deeper than income alone. In one easy-to-read volume, she demonstrates how family of origin, codependent behaviors, poor choices, low self-esteem and resultant pathetic negotiating skills drag underearners down. Taylor then explains how addressing those issues is critical to stopping the cycle of underearning madness.
Taylor offers up seventeen clear, practical things you can start doing immediately, and loads of resources to begin the process of shedding self-defeating behaviors, planning a better future and beginning your journey to earning what you deserve.

I am very impressed with this book, and think it's one of the best self-help books, not only for financial advice but in general, that I have ever read. What I responded to the most about it is that it wasn't written by someone who went through hard times and married her way out of her money problems (to a rich man, like some of the women's financial self-books), and not written by someone who is now living on Easy Street either. It also wasn't filled with dumb, obvious advice like "Cut out your daily latte" or "Stop dry cleaning your clothes" blah blah blah. When you really don't have money, you probably aren't doing those things too much anyway. And really, this book isn't even specifically about money--it's about realizing and believing you have the potential to earn more and deserve more in life.
This book changed my life. Downloaded on a whim, because I'm trying to understand myself better. I never heard of under earning (I don't even think it's in the dictionary yet) or the fact that codependency causes money woes. By all accounts I believe I should be wealthy and I'm not. I've read everything, from basic no nonsense to the esoterical and this book delivered and brought me to reality. It opened my eyes to why I am the way I am. Read her stories and think about how you can relate to it, especially your upbringing and it will all make sense. I definitely have some work to do on myself. Also, if you procrastinate or waste time please read this book.
Reading this book made me feel like she'd known me my whole life. Trust me it will explain why you have money issues, and why you don't make best of the talents or abilities you may have. Thanks so much to the author, with hard work I now believe I am going to live my potential now that I'm aware of the root of my...
I follow this author's blog about underearning and was looking forward to reading her book. It is outstanding!
It is evident that Miss Taylor did exhaustive research and then whittled it down to concise, reader-friendly text. It is absorbing, revealing, and a little unsettling to read of the insidious nature of underearning and low self-esteem and their relation to family of origin and the choices made as an adult. Taylor really digs into these topics - essential to understanding why we made, and continue to make, choices that mirror the level of self-worth we have (or don't have).
The two major issues of our own codependency and the narcissism of others are examined scrupulously. There is a section with a lot of statistics that I found a bit challenging but they are there to support Taylor's assertions. She is fearless in her discussion of her own life and how these issues profoundly affected the choices she made in marriage, work, and friendships. Her own...
