Additional Information

When William Denholm and William McKay teamed up in 1870 to form a dry goods store in the factory town of Worcester, Massachusetts, they could not have imagined the 103-year legacy that would make their store a beloved New England landmark. Former customers may well recall the store's elaborate promotions that took shoppers to exotic locales, from an African holiday to a trip through the Italian fashion world. Join authors Christopher Sawyer and Patricia Wolf, daughter of a former Denholms president, as they take a behind-the-scenes view of the history and memory of Massachusetts's largest department store outside of Boston. With vivid descriptions of the festive holiday displays and personal recollections from former employees, this book is sure to make any reader nostalgic for the bygone days of shopping at Denholms.

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

I have always been fascinated with department stores from the time as a young child since the early 80's. I grew up with Boston's own Filene's and Jordan Marsh. Thus far I have read Filene's, Gimbel's Lazarus, Rich's, Burdine's and now Denholms. Mr. Christopher Sawyer and Ms. Patricia A. Wolf, should be proud for writing and producing a truly great read, that gave a beautiful, meticulous, and precise account of the Denholm and McKay Department Store. The stories and how this institution was the cultural epicenter of Worcester, is definitely a must read for anyone who grew up in Worcester, shopped Denholms, or is even a Department Store enthusiast as myself. Having read, I wish I would have been fortunate enough to have been around to have shopped at Denholms, but unfortunately, When I was born, Denholms had already been out of business for two year. Thank You Mr. Sawyer, and Ms. Wolf for sharing this important story about Worcester, and Massachusetts. To everyone else, BUY THE BOOK... Read more
Brought back great memories of a great store.
My mother shopped Denholms when I was a kid, it was
like no other store we went to. Live fashion shows,
great displays, it was princess like to a little girl.
An excellent gift. Again I gave this as a gift to a life long resident of Worcester. She loved it as it brought back many, many memories.
