Looking for good first 20" BMX for a ten year old, I discovered a lot has changed since the 80's when I raced.
Many of the old school makers of premium bikes entered the mass market arena at some point, only to have their name tarnished as the quality of their builds dropped in response to the price demands that market demands. Diamandback has joined that list.
This is NOT the Viper of yore. There isn't a single bit of Chromoly on it, all of it Hi-Ten steel, which makes for a heavy bike. BUT, this does not make it a bad bike, and considering the price, the build quality is OK. My boy isn't ready for a better bike yet, and at 54" tall there were not a lot of choices that were sized right. I wanted something with a sub 20" top-tube, and cranks around 160 cm and this fit the bill. Even so, he struggles a bit, but he's growing fast and by spring I think he'll be fine. I measured the cranks because they looked longer than the quoted 165 cm,...
The bike on a timely manner. The box was intact. My son got it for Christmas. It was easy to assemble and only took less than half an hour to complete. My son says his favorite thing about it is how fast it is compared to his old bike.
When I spend $170 for a bicycle, I would at least expect it to have some sort of coherent instructions. Instead, for your money, you're given a thick booklet that covers a huge number of Diamondback bikes. Meaning: there are many different handlebar/seat/pedal/brake types... and you have to figure it out for yourself which type you have. Add to that the tiny diagrams (truly: the size of a thumbnail) and you can't tell what is going on. After more than an hour, I had managed to get the pedals, reflectors, and handlebar on (be warned: it is very hard for one person to do it by his/herself). But the brakes were a joke. The instructions gave me no idea what to do so I thought I was doing what was right... and managed to detach the brakes from the wheel end. All of this means I now need to take it into a bike shop to pay to have the brakes put on correctly. Fun. Again, for $170--how hard is it for Diamondback to create custom manuals for their specific bikes. Ridiculous. Won't buy from...
