Diana Mosley was a society beauty who fell from grace when she left her husband, brewery heir Bryan Guinness, for Sir Oswald Mosley, an admirer of Mussolini and a notorious womanizer. This horrified her family and scandalized society.
In 1933, Diana met the new German leader, Adolf Hitler. They became close friends and he attended her wedding as the guest of honor. During the war, the Mosleys' association with Hitler led them to be arrested and interned for three and a half years. Diana's relationships with Hitler and Mosley defined her life in the public eye and marked her as a woman who possessed a singular lack of empathy for those less blessed at birth.
Anne de Courcy's revealing biography chronicles one of the most intriguing, controversial women of the twentieth century. It is a riveting tell-all memoir of a leading society hostess, a woman with intimate access to the highest literary, political, and social circles of her time. Written with Mosley's exclusive cooperation and based upon hundreds of hours of taped interviews and unprecedented access to her private papers, letters, and diaries, Lady Mosley's only stipulation was that the book not be published until after her death.

This woman knew everyone as well as everyone's secrets. An intimate of Hitler. He first husband was the heir to Guinness whom she left to become (along with her sister) the mistress of Oswald Mosley. She later married Mosley in Magda Goebbels living with Hitler as witness. Strong willed and unrepentant she spent more than three years in prison during the WWII. De Courcy's writing is graceful, intelligent, appropriately gossipy as she recounts the time and the politics of this close witness to histories greatest and most evil times. Sometimes all the nicknames of the Mitford sisters became confusing. And the history of the British fascist movement although carefully documented could have been broadened of more analysis of its roots. Yes, the great strike was one of the causes (as well as an influence on the Cambridge spies) but why?
Dianne was just one of the extraordinary Mitford sisters. A gifted, intelligent and very beautiful woman her life was one of terrible decisions. She left her first marriage to a Guiness heir for Sir Oswald Mosley, the leader of the British Fascist party. This marriage and her friendship with Hitler led to 3 years in jail during WW II. She remained loyal to Mosley and defended Hitler even after the war which led her to semi-exile in Paris. The book is well written and well researched. A compelling read.
Fascinating and well written. I enjoyed it.
