I just noticed that amazon has put my review of the 2005 DVD on the page for the 2012 Special Edition DVD, and vice versa. I wish they wouldn't do that.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart is dealing with the officious Mr. Chin, representative of the Committee of Enquiry for the Ministry of Defence (how the Brits spell it). Chin is furious that the Doctor, who has no file or background check, has the run of UNIT operations. The Doctor is furious right back, but fortunately, they are interrupted.

For one thing, the Doctor is sure that the Master has left Earth, after being bested in the previous episode, "The Mind of Evil". The Brigadier, however, is not so sure, and he's directing the search. For another thing, a UFO has landed or crash-landed in England, and needs to be investigated. It has sent UNIT a transmission: "Axos calling Earth. Fuel systems exhausted. Request immediate assistance. Immediate... Read more
American secret agent Bill Filer has been summoned to England to help locate the Doctor's arch-enemy, the Master, and bring him to justice. There's tension at UNIT, as the Ministry of Defence has placed tempermental British politician Horatio Chinn in overall charge of operations. Chinn is a member of a xenophobic, anti-immigration political group calling itself England For The English. Chinn clashes with Filer as well as with the Doctor and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

A mysterious object crashlands in the region near the Nuton Power Complex. Investigating, Filer finds himself captured and taken aboard.

With Chinn in command, UNIT surrounds the object, which turns out to be a spaceship. The crew reveal themselves as beautiful golden humanoids called Axons, who request the Earthlings' help in repairing their damaged ship, in return for a miraculous new element called Axonite, which the Axons claim can revitalize the world's economy. The Doctor is suspicious... Read more
In a wonderful scene from "The Claws of Axos", the Master is attempting to make off with the Doctor's Tardis (a space/time vehicle, if you don't follow the show regularly) and, frustrated by its ramshackle, unusable state, fumes that it's an "overweight, underpowered museum piece." Unkind viewers now might draw the same conclusions about this "Doctor Who" storyline as a whole, and they wouldn't be completely off base.

Of course, museum pieces have their own charm. That's why we go to museums, after all. And one of the coolest features of this storyline is the funky, organic design of Axos itself and the plethora of different psychedelic effects as he/she/it metamorphosizes, cajoles, threatens, freaks out, and interacts with the other characters in general. Certainly it's redolent of a late '60's/early '70's zeitgeist (perhaps Axos hails from a star in the Aquarius constellation?), but it's also incredibly inventive and well designed and really does look like some...
