Tonight, Vicky Caine will miss her bus and take a shortcut through the wood. And she will disappear too. England, 1917. Between the village and the main road lies an ancient wood. The old Roman road bends to avoid it. Tonight Emily Bostock and a man called Rory Williams will go to the woods. Investigating events in the present day and back in 1917, the Doctor and Amy are desperate to find out what's happened to Rory. He was supposed to look after Emily - and now they've both vanished. My husband read this book to our children as a bedtime story. Now, you have to understand the audience here: 4 girls, between the ages of 8 and 14, who are all UTTER Whovians. One of them has a bowtie (bowties are cool!) and a fez (fezzes are cool!). Two of them have overcoats. One has an extra long, multicolor scarf. They've watched the episodes over and over again. They KNOW Doctor Who. They LOVED this book. They laughed, squealed, gasped, or suddenly burst into chattering approval as the Doctor or Amy or Rory suddenly did something you would TOTALLY expect them to do. The plot includes some really marvelous use of forward and back time manipulation, and the only question I had lingering at the end was, what exactly WAS the clock in the police station doing that was so wrong? I still haven't figured it out!

We were all very pleased, or as my children said, they would like to have Ms. McCormack bronzed for posterity. They're very discerning, my children. They know a good... Read more
Being an Uber-Whovian myself, and like so many of you out there are as well, I feel that the only downfall of being a mega-fan is that the number of stories being produced will never be enough to satisfy the obsessive cravings brought on by our fandom. With this new series of novels featuring the Eleventh Doctor as played by Matt Smith and his two companions Amy and Rory, everybody's favorite time traveling alien is back and as clever as ever. Feeling a little lost and empty after the Doctor Who season finale? Why say goodbye to The Doctor and his TARDIS until Christmas? Keep the good ol' fashion timey wimey mysteries you love going with Doctor Who: Way Through the Woods. This story contains an enigma, wrapped inside a mystery, wrapped inside an enigma and is appropriate and enjoyable for all ages. It starts out with numerous disappearances throughout the centuries in an ancient forest known as 'Swallow Woods', a place that has been avoided ever since the Romans, who, while... Read more

This was the second full-length novel Una McCormack had written for Doctor Who, the first being Doctor Who: The King's Dragon (also 11+Amy/Rory). I was slightly worried when I picked up this one because 'The King's Dragon' was incredibly similar to the story of Beowulf. I thought 'The Way Through The Woods' with a wolf on the cover would be her version of Little Red Riding Hood or something. But it was not. By the way, there were no wolves in the novel. Bad deceiving cover!

McCormack's latest Who novel was a lot better than her first one, even though I've gave both of them same grade. They are receiving the same grade for different reasons.

'The Way Through The Woods' had an excellent story. I was really intrigued by the mystery of Swallow Woods and the hundreds who disappeared into it... Read more
