Myles pushed back his seat and they moved out of the room and into the hall that seemed a lot less busy.
â€˜What is it?â€™ asked Myles.
â€˜I need to ask you something.â€™
Myles had known Eugene a long time to know that his questions usually involved a woman.
â€˜First of all, I probably wonâ€™t be able to help you. This is my wedding day, Iâ€™m not setting you up with anyone.â€™
Eugene laughed. â€˜Itâ€™s not like I need help with that. Do I?â€™
â€˜Probably not, but am I wrong in thinking that this involves a woman.â€™
â€˜Not entirely.â€™
â€˜I thought so.â€™
â€˜I just wanted a little information on that pretty maid of honour.â€™
â€˜Oh no you donâ€™t!â€™ Myles was serious. â€˜This one is not just any woman, sheâ€™s not another notch in your bed post.â€™
â€˜Blimey! It almost sounds like you like her yourself.â€™
â€˜Itâ€™s not what you think. Sheâ€™s very important to the woman I love, and I wonâ€™t let you near her.â€™
â€˜Wonâ€™t let me?â€™ He laughed.
â€˜Yes, I wonâ€™t let you!â€™
â€˜I donâ€™t need your permission.â€™
â€˜Well then, you donâ€™t need my help.â€™ He was about to walk away.
â€˜Okay wait, just hear me out.â€™
â€˜Sheâ€™s not just any woman. You canâ€™t just walk into her life and walk out like you do.â€™
â€˜Iâ€™m not going to do that.â€™
â€˜I mean it Eugene. Iâ€™m your friend, but Emily means more to me.â€™
â€˜Wow! You have changed!â€™
â€˜I have, Iâ€™m a man now. A responsible one.â€™
â€˜And Iâ€™m not?â€™
â€˜Iâ€¦listen, letâ€™s just get back to the reception.â€™
â€˜Not until you tell me her name.â€™
â€˜Ask her yourself!â€™ Myles was a little put off. It had always been this way with Eugene, and he never expected him to change.
â€˜Maybe I willâ€¦oh and thanks for nothing.â€™ He started to walk off.
â€˜Hey man. Just leave this one alone. Please.â€™ He begged.
Eugene turned towards his friend with his hands in his suit pockets, and pursed his lips.
â€˜Just leave her alone.â€™
â€˜I think Iâ€™ll let her make that decision,â€™ he said and walked away.
Myles shook his head, watched as his friend walked away and head for the balcony.
â€˜Some things never change,â€™ said Myles under his breath.
