I am an orthopedic surgeon who had an ankle injury. This knee walker is not as stable, or as easy to get around in as the heavier, steerable unit I rented for a few days, but it is much more convenient to get around the community with, as well as for travelling, as it is so much lighter and also fold-able so I can take it in the front seat of the car, rather than having to put it in the back of my SUV and use crutches to get to the driver's seat. It also collapses to allow it to roll onto and be put away in an airplane.
If you are a fairly fit person with good balance who doesn't mind having to change direction by picking up the front of the walker and re-directing it, you should do fine with this. If you are frail, weak, or have poor balance, you probably should have the steerable unit, which is much more stable and easier to maneuver. If you are not planning to leave the house or have an easy exit from your home, the steerable units should work for you, too.
General comments: I have a broken heel bone. I got a steerable Drive walker from Amazon about a month ago and am very pleased with it, but it is difficult to lift into and out of car and very difficult to move up and down stairs. This is better for doing both. As many have noted, it is not steerable. You must lift the front while standing on your good leg and pivot. However, I find myself doing that often on the steerable walker so it's not that much of a liability. It is more difficult to use if you need to cross any distance, like across a parking lot or in a mall. The unit seems to be well made. I gave it three stars for the reasons given below. If you do not need the portability of a lighter, collapsible unit, I recommend getting the steerable knee walker. It cost me $182 on Amazon, vs. $156 for this, so the price is comparable.
Assembly: This comes with no assembly instructions and it's not obvious into which of the four rear tubes to insert the...
My dad had surgery on his left ankle. He was given a walker but the problem is his "good" right leg has a knee problem so the walker was putting added strain on it. He couldnt go 10 feet without his knee giving his a problem. Enter the knee walker. This thing works like a charm. I mean just to move around the house the thing is worth it. My dad hasnt been outside since his surgery so I opted for this version since its more stable and better at one hand operation than the other versions that steer. Also its narrow so perfect for home use. Its not totally light which adds to its stability. It has a brake and the brake locks if you need to keep it from moving. It folds also. My dad gets around the house so much easier. The only draw back is it dosent steer so you have to stop and lift it slightly to turn but believe me its still good. @ndreas
