Fintan Dunne, the detective at the center of The Man Who Never Returned and Hour of the Cat, is back in this spellbinding story of an ill-fated OSS mission into the heart of the Eastern front and its consequences more than a decade after the war's end.

As the Red Army continues its unstoppable march toward Berlin in the winter of 1945, Dunne and his fellow soldier Dick Van Hull volunteer for a dangerous drop behind enemy lines to rescue a team of OSS officers trying to abet the Czech resistance. When the plan goes south, Dunne and Van Hull uncover a secret that will change both of their lives. Years later, Dunne is drawn back into the shadowy realm of Cold War espionage in an effort to clear his friend's good name and right an injustice so shocking that men would, quite literally, kill to keep it quiet.

A literary thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end, Dry Bones completes the trilogy started in Hour of the Cat. Peter Quinn has crafted yet another smart and stylish historical mystery, following his longtime hero from the last gasp of the Third Reich to the heady days of the Cuban revolution. Quinn's signature prose--which Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt described as "spare but passionate, wry but loving"--shines once again throughout. New York Times bestselling author James Patterson credits Quinn with "perfecting, if not actually creating, a genre you could call the history-mystery." Blending fact and fiction into a thoroughly compelling whole, this is Quinn at his very best.

I have read all three of Peter Quinn's novels featuring Fintan Dunne. The first one, "The Hour of the Cat" is the best of the three in my opinion, with "Dry Bones" running a close second.

I may be prejudiced about these books because I truely enjoy Quinn's style of writing. All three novels are powerful stories with real characters and events woven into the plots. Recently, I told a friend of mine that I would enjoy reading a Peter Quinn book even if it had no plot or story line what-so-ever. I like his writing that much.

There is a lot of David Downing and Raymond Chandler in Quinn's style. Downing ushers the reader around prewar Berlin in "Zoo Station" to the point that the reader fells like he knows the place and is in the scene. Quinn does this same sort of thing with 1940s and 50s New York and in doing so, masterly recreates an entire era. Quinn is good at employing devices that pull the reader into the story experience. He is a master at using things... Read more
"Dry Bones" is the last novel in author Peter Quinn's trilogy, featuring NYC cop and OSS officer, Fintan Dunne. The books need not be read in order; like British novelist Philip Kerr and his "Bernie Gunther" character, Quinn jumps Dunne from the 1930s to the 1960's, and back again, in the course of his books.

Fintan Dunne - a veteran of WW1 where he fought in the battlefields under the command of "Wild Bill" Donovan, has a different war in WW2. After a post-war career as a NYPD cop and then as a private investigator, Dunne goes back to work, again under Donovan, in the wartime OSS. His final mission in the war - parachuting with two others into Slovakia in 1945 - goes disastrously wrong. He and Dick Van Hull emerge from Prague alive but after surviving a horrific escape. The people they meet along the way - including the OSS officers who have set up the mission - come together 13 years after the war as secrets are told and murders are done.

This was actually between 2 stars and 3 stars for me. I thought there was potentially a good story in this book, but the author's style isn't particularly appealing and the way he chose to tell the story (multiple flashbacks) wasn't appealing either. The dialogue was wooden, and the characters not terribly believable or sympathetic. All in all, I would not recommend it.
If you are interested, however, it is a spy story starting at the end of WWII and proceeding through the late 50's where eventually it ends up with the hero and others trying to uncover an odious Nazi doctor who experimented on and tortured humans at one of the Nazi concentration camps, but who is taken under the wing of and hidden by the CIA following the end of the war because of intelligence he has that relates to the Russians.
