“Robert Ludlum with a sense of humor,” Detroit News

One of the Most Acclaimed Espionage Novels Ever Written… And Also One of the Funniest.

It’s the mid-1980s and the cold war hasn’t thawed. The Library, a super-secret U.S. espionage agency is keeping an eye on the Russians and everybody else. A dozen elite intelligence experts relentlessly sift out classified information from everywhere. They know all the secrets except for one – which of the librarians is a traitor.

It’s up to Walt Coolidge, a librarian with a Sherlockian gift for analyzing people’s garbage, to uncover the mole and, if he fails, it could lead to nuclear Armageddon.

“A book that administers charm and dismay in beautifully balanced proportions,” Los Angeles Times

“Tough, funny, quirky, bawdy, suspenseful. I defy any reader to guess where this story is going… I predict a long, hearty life for this novel.” Bestselling author John D. MacDonald writing for USA Today

“Deftly plotted and smoothly written, several cuts above the norm,” Cosmopolitan

“Sharp, fresh, beguiling, somewhere between ‘Dr. Strangelove’ fantasy and dead-on-target Washington reality,” Kirkus

“Highly entertaining, the plot is marvelously intricate, wild and still somehow plausible…a truly wonderful book” New York Daily News

The Stan Lee who is the author of Dunn's Conundrum is Stanley R. Lee, NOT the Stan Lee (Lieber) of Marvel Comics fame who is listed erroneously as the author in the bio on the book's Amazon sales page. As for the book, it is a prophetic blue print for the current scandal of NSA spying. Lee lays out the building of a surveillance state from the FISA Court inception in 1974. The book was published in 1985 and the technology today is light years ahead of what Lee imagined, but the premise holds - all-inclusive data on everyone, everywhere. To anyone who read this book when it first came out, and to the small army of conspiracy theorists, the Snowden revelations about the monitoring of the public's private lives by government agencies is not a new or absurd idea. This is a well-told story with just the right combination of clarity and wit. The other relevant connection to the current NSA spying revelations (2013)is the crisis of integrity that overcomes the various employees of the... Read more
Jumped around a lot from place to place, the characters were well defined, but so many to keep track of. Really uneven at the beginning, but evened out as the story went on. Not a logical progression of events, which kept things interesting. Once I got into the mood, and understood the author's point of view, it got better and better. The diatribe on garbage and what can be learned from it was fantastic. Lots of interesting concepts that make you think.
A page-turner, breathlessly mixing NSA-type government intrigue with spy-killer intensity. It's a 1985 novel that's prescient in the current NSA argument. Just fun!
