I have, so far as I can tell, every book in English on learning classical Chinese and several in French. This is because none seem to fully explain the difficulties of this esoteric language. I bought this because Archie Barnes; book on Learning Chinese through Poetry is the lession book in which I have been able to make the most progress.

This new book is by far the clearest on grammar. It consists mainly of explanations of so callee "empty words" that students in China are taught do not mean anything. Of course they do have meanings or they would not be there. Since the Chinese characters are by their nature invariant, they cannot express case, number, tense, etc., the language employs grammatical markers. These are characters that can make the nouns, verbs and other parts of speech more precise and specific.
These markers are complex, not least because each has multiple meanings. While this book does not make mastering these frustrating characters easy, it does... Read more
The grammar of classical Chinese is notoriously difficult because so many of the little connective words like "of", "because", and "in" are typically omitted. This well-written and student-tested overview recognizes these important differences from English grammar, and carefully emphasizes and exemplifies them. It is worth noting that it is a labor of love by Archie Barnes's students, creating a book out of their teacher's lectures. See also their version of his "Introduction to Classical Chinese Through Poetry".
Du's Handbook of Classical Chinese Grammar is a full title. First I thought that `Du' is for Chinese Professor, or lecturer. Du is for Durham University, Great Britain, and this is the place where the book was born and published. Cover design by Gisele Malenfant is splendid, an explanation of Chinese hieroglyphs will be on the Copyright page, 2009. All characters in this book are beautiful. Hieroglyphs are traditional, simplified forms are in the end of the book. They have Latin form and tone commonly used in China.
After Main Features of Classical Chinese Grammar and Classical Chinese Function Characters you can find and practice reading of Five Classical Chinese Stories. Of course, there is Dictionary and Index. The authors didn't say, how many articles are in the dictionary, because they knew exactly that somebody who loves Chinese will count it and say for all other people. So, it is my pleasure to tell there are 1189 characters in the Dictionary for Grammar Section... Read more
