When her sister Patty died, Jenna blamed herself. When Jenna died, she blamed herself for that, too. Unfortunately Jenna died too soon. Living or dead, every soul is promised a certain amount of time, and when Jenna passed she found a heavy debt of time in her record. Unwilling to simply steal that time from the living, Jenna earns every day she leeches with volunteer work at a suicide prevention hotline.
But something has come for the ghosts of New York, something beyond reason, beyond death, beyond hope; something that can bind ghosts to mirrors and make them do its bidding. Only Jenna stands in its way.
Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day is a new standalone urban fantasy novella from New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire.

McGuire knows about ghosts and witches. She introduced us to many different kinds of people - routewitches, crossroads ghosts, etc. - in Sparrow Hill Road. Here in the Dusk, it is a different world of fables and tales, but there are ghosts and witches just the same. There are ghosts in mirrors and witches in cornfields, only sometimes the ghosts are just getting coffee and pie, and the corn witch is playing guitar in the corner of the diner.
Ghosts have threads of life, too, we learn, and when they are cut short, someone has to weave in the days and years that span the difference between their time of death and their time of dying day. Jenna died too early, running away from grief. So she went to New York City to try to earn herself onward to her actual dying day, one precious lifesaving minute at a time. Then she found out that someone was stealing ghosts out of existence. And she stopped running away, and started running *toward*.
I normally don’t give warnings for books but I feel like this one might need one.
Warning: This book touches on death and suicide. If these are trigger points for you then maybe skip it. But if you are up for a darker read than most of Seanan McGuire’s other works then give it a try.
The beginning of this is pretty dark. Jenna has just lost her sister to suicide only to right after get caught in a storm and die too. <--Not really a spoiler since that all happens in the first 10 pages. Now in her death she volunteers her time at a suicide hotline as her own form of penance to her sister.
As always I love Seanan McGuire’s (SM) writing style and her very interesting reimagining of the world we live in. She does a fantastic job of building a world with Ghosts and Witches in it in a very short time. I think that she is brilliant in the ways she interweaves the details of this world into the story without...
Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day, besides having a title that is a heck of a mouthful, is a slim novel that took me way too long to get through due to work, family issues and other commitments that limited my reading time. I only mention this because I feel some of the day-to-day life issues severely got in the way of my being able to fully enjoy and escape into this book. When you can only enjoy a chapter or two a day, and even then are unable to escape interruption, it can really mess with the story's pacing (at least in my opinion...). So, these issues are on me, but I ultimately felt this was a four-star read and I dug the heck out of it. If I were able to really sink in and inhabit the world a bit more freely, this might have been a fiver just for the writing alone. I love McGuire's word-smithing, and her prose here reaches an almost lyrical level at times.
