Additional Information

With $20 in her shoe and a heart full of dreams, Lisa O’Hara moved to New York City to turn 40, write stuff, and get the hell away from teaching school. What she didn’t expect was NEW YORK, where every moment is a story in potential, whether you want that story in that moment or not. And there was nothing else to do but write them down. Artist Lisa DiPetto provides the inspired illustrations.

I grew up in New York, abandoned it twice, and never really understood why I moved back -- or, how and when I finally became a New Yorker. Until I read Miss O'.

Lincoln Center is marvelous, the Statue of Liberty inspires awe, and the cultural opportunities in New York are unparalleled. But Lisa O'Hara's meditations in "Easier to Live Here" cut through the noise, the lights, and the buzz that surrounds New York, and tap into the quiet insanity and brilliance that drive this place.

My apartment plays host to many friends from all over the world -- New York hotels are mighty pricey. The next time I have guests, I'll tell them "make sure you see Central Park, don't miss MOMA, and take the Staten Island Ferry to view the Statue of Liberty." But then I'll hand them my Kindle and suggest they read "Easier to Live Here" before starting on any adventures: it's the best way to understand how New York City breathes.
Lisa writes in one spot "And really isn't that how everyone talks to each other? Different languages, whatever the words." And that may be so but the particular words she uses to whisk the reader around brief glimpses of the city give particular credence to her assertion that it's easier to live there than to just visit. She allows us to meet her neighbors Antoinette and Tony well enough that I'd look to the window to wave to her if I walked down that street tomorrow. She manages in one sentence, "My doused corduroys will never dry today, but at least my shoulders are free of that chip.", to see both the visual and emotional snapshot of of her daily train encounters. All the while asking us to enjoy the city she calls home in a way you can't by just visiting. Brilliant descriptions and insights; at times rollicking funny and others poignantly sorrowful. Cheers, with a single malt to this fabulous journey.
I can't say enough good things about this book. O'Hara brilliantly captures the magnificent in the seemingly mundane. Her observations will challenge you to look up from your device, observe the world around you, and find the perfectly choreographed joy hidden in the chaos. It's a quick read that will leave you wanting more.
