Temperature-controlled cable runs straight along pipe and valves, held in place by application tape and plugs into grounded electrical outlet. Keeps water flowing down to -380. For odd lengths of pipe over 3/4 inches in diameter, we recommend two separate cables on opposite sides of the pipe with up to 3 feet of overrun at center of pipe run. Metal pipe requires 1/2-inch fiberglass insulation around cable. For plastic pipe, its recommended wrapping pipe with aluminum foil before cable installation. The traditional resistance cable produces a fixed amount of heat based on the electrical line feed. It comes with a built-in thermostat that switches the flow of electricity on and off based on temperature. Cable installs fast and easy. Each package contains grounded plug, built in thermostat and instructions. Cable has weather resistant PVC outer jacket and inner insulation. Keeps water flowing down to 40 F.

I bought the 80-foot item. Installation went as expected. The instructions are pretty good. Of course, you need to purchase some kind of adhesive tape separately, to attach the cable to the pipe. I used the brand tape (Easy Heat HCA 30-Foot Pipe Heating Cable Application Tape - four rolls for 160') but you can use any high temperature rated electrical tape. Like always with these cables, you need to lay out the cable plan so that the full cable can be in contact with the pipe, including the thermostat module. The thermostat module needs to be attached directly to the pipe, hopefully at the coldest point.
As for performance... it did work... eventually. We spent a lot of time jiggling things around before the cable actually started working. I can't tell you if it was a contact point in the plug, in the thermostat module, or in the end-cap at...
I wanted to build a cold frame for my flower and garden seedlings. I contacted an engineer at Emerson (the company), and I never heard anyone so negative on trying something like using this as a heat source. It works great--the cold frame cover is an old replacement window, double pained. I cut a piece of plywood just smaller than the window dimensions, made a "box" out of some old 2X12's, and found I wanted a 40 foot length of the heat cable---spaced 3" apart.
I used large staples that were wider than the cable, and nailed the cable to the piece of plywood, also had about a half inch of "opening" to the ground for watering. The thermostat button, I exposed to the air temperature in the cold frame.
This is a great heater, should last many years. I am amazed at companies like Emerson Electric for their lack of vision. I have so far experienced temperatures down to 19 degrees, with that cable keeping the box temperature at 47 degrees; the stated...
Works as advertised. What more can you ask?
I'm using it off-label to keep an outdoor water hose from freezing up. So it gets warmer than designed, but has been doing a great job keeping the water flowing during 20 degree weather (20F) we've had. Ran the heater along the 5/8" hose and covered with those 6' foam insulation strips for 1" pipe.
The thermostat is in free air, so the heat is on with air temps 35 to 45 degrees. When the tape is on for an extended period with no flow, the water can warm to about 70 degrees... so no fear of melting the hose at this point.
