This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali. By turns rapturous and rueful, this wise and funny author (whom Booklist calls “Anne Lamott’s hip, yoga- practicing, footloose younger sister”) is poised to garner yet more adoring fans.

This woman hurts innocent people to make herself feel something. Then she spins her self-justifications into gold for herself. Wow, what a role model for us all. The book is shallow and pretentious, if breezily and wittily written. But it's a good textbook on the false narratives narcissistic people weave to make themselves seem fabulous while "honestly" revealing a few "endearing" flaws here and there. The author has since written an op-ed piece in the NY Times about her addiction to seduction. Read that, and see if you don't want to douse yourself in hand sanitizer afterwards. Wives, lock up your husbands because apparently once the author fixates on him, nothing will stop her in pursuit of that "high." She's temporarily satiated once she cuts your heart into a dozen bloody pieces and feeds the pieces, like grapes, to your ensnared husband. Does she then build any happiness atop the ruined family she set out to destroy? Nope, cuz, ya see, she's hungry...
This book is well-written which is the only good thing I can say about it. Clearly Ms Gilbert felt an urge to pour out all her innermost emotions in writing whether or not readers could empathize or sympathize. A great number of women of her age have been through divorce and broken love affairs, also in some cases, even bereavement, and have suffered from depression but have had to press on with their lives, their work and families without resorting to such a degree of maudlin self-pity which it would appear to only be curable by travelling to far-off places to seek enlightment of the soul and then pouring it all out at great length and detail to anyone who would take the time and effort to read it.
Well, she has got it all off her chest but quite honestly who gives a damn?
The lengthy descrptions of her Yoga retreat experience and meditation were boring beyond belief to any reader who may not also be a soul-seeker so that I found myself skipping huge chunks of...
i loved her book "The Signature of All Things". This is more of an autobiography about a needy, self centered person
