Additional Information

Ryan Miner lost his wife, Sophie, four years ago. Her death nearly killed him. But, in a way, it also saved him. His parents, his kids, their friends--it saved them, too.

It brought them to his cabin in the remote wilderness of northern Minnesota that second week of October, in 2020. They were there to celebrate what would have been Sophie's 40th birthday.
All things considered, life was good.

Then…death came…again. A coded message on the radio spoke of a massive chemical attack. Over ninety percent of the country…dead!!
First, a toxic apocalypse; and now, a military force is sweeping the country to finish off…EVERY…LAST…American.

This was only the beginning…of The End.

I normally don't write reviews on the books I read, in fact this is the first one. The reason I was compelled to write this is that this book is just so overwhelmingly fantastical and just downright unbelievable. I almost gave up a number of times, but finished it anyway.

Just so I don’t look like a false reviewer, I will give some examples.

The main characters are just too heroic in all their skills. The main antagonist (from Nigeria) is rapidly promoted because he is so brilliant and his brother follows in his footsteps and was also trained as a pilot, he “could expertly fly any kind of aircraft”. Really? In his early twenties? From Nigeria?

At some point the main characters are hiding in a cave. In order to survive a winter, they have some “necessities”. Before I get into the details, bear in mind that the characters need to carry this stuff over 7 miles, up a mountain, in the... Read more
I wound up thoroughly enjoying this story -- and buying and enjoying the second book in the series -- although I nearly bagged it after the first 20 pages or so. The characters end up being richly drawn and beautifully unpredictable, although the process starts out slowly and a bit chaotically. This book takes a bit to get started, but once you simply "let go," all is well. And speaking of letting go, my biggest challenge with the book(s) is that they require a HUGE suspension of disbelief (many post-apocalyptic factors are completely ignored). If you can do that, realizing that this is entertainment and not literature, you will enjoy the ride. (Think TV's Lost, minus the horrible ending.) The author is just starting to catch his stride, and the second book is better than the first. Can't wait for the remaining books in the series. Hint, hint!
Four stars. Easily.
Normally I prefer thrillers to have a believable premise. I'm not a zombie apocalypse reader, but once you get past those issues, this is a lot of fun to read. By all that I mean that there are issues mostly with the seven countries that initiate the attack, but after that, it's fine. That said, I can see a more limited cast, Russia, China, Venezuela, perhaps other countries that don't like us, but not Japan, or even Colombia. I did like the inclusion of Mexico in the group, though. So now that I got that off my chest, the action is nonstop. Characters are believable, and even the tech is not beyond belief. I like the fact that the good guys are not invincible, too. There is just enough of the back stories about the characters, not too much to get in the way of the story flow. I have read the first two, and am looking forward to number three.
