I watched one and a half episodes. The story line, I liked; the acting I liked; the amount of graphic sex and nudity scenes were so over-the- top-unnecessary, I did not like. Those scenes were a complete waste of my time. I always wonder how directors don't understand when the sexual content does NOT enhance an action/detective movie. Could it be they felt story line was weak? Look at MI5, it had very little sex - and no nudity- and was extremely successful! There are mysteries, romance, action, suspense, etc., and I like it when the boundaries don't blur, or when they contain just a little blurring between categories. Strike Back blurred a lot of category boundaries.
Years ago, there was an excellent tv series on British television called "The Sandbaggers," showing how the intelligence community really worked on the ground, with Orwell's "rough men" doing bad things to bad people.
Take that, ramp it up with modern technology - great ops room - and match it with smart guys using guns and explosive - lots of guns, lots of explosives - with some of the most expert stunt work in this field you will see. Now, add two guys - one, classic upper class (meritocratic) SAS/MI-6 type, and another, bit of a wild man, ex Delta Force, great with the ladies. Then, add a smart women to do the thinking - Amanda Mealing is perfect.
Mix with bad people doing bad things, and you have a masterfully directed series, one that is well worth watching.
This is based in Capetown, South Africa (great scenery!) , but they go all over the hemisphere, particularly the rougher parts of Africa, so you get a travel show, and, as this...
This is a study in a genre that reflects both the Cinemax style, and presumably its audience, as well as the development of the action adventure art. It's a buddy production with two perfectly drawn stick figures, a Brit and an American, both too handsome for their own good. The Brit broods and has the emotional burden to bear between his fierce loyalty to soldiering and his wife back home, and the American who has never met a sexual challenge he is not ready, willing, and able to counter. The supporting cast of stick figures in the special ops unit are as predictable as any ever seen. The difference is that the ability to provide wall to wall action is stunning. The body count is uncountable. Explosions abound, both of fixed objects and enough cars to please the most hardened demand. The bullet count is high enough to keep a factory in business for weeks on end. The evil men and women look it in near comic book style, the good guys often die to keep the cast uncluttered. The downside...
