After viewing the first 3 eps of the series, it's not hyperbole to say Humans is probably the best terrestrial science fiction currently on the small screen. While not a new idea, the way it's presented here leaves you wondering why showrunners haven't given us androids in precisely this manner previously. Adapted from Sweden's Äkta människor (Real Humans), Humans is an English remake for the UK's Channel 4 (and AMC in the States).
PLOT Synths are androids that have become commonplace in the fabric of society. They are put to work doing exactly what you would imagine: numerous types of labor in the public and private sectors, and performing domestic roles like housekeeping, childcare, and eldercare. And of course, what would humanity be without android sex workers?
Humans presents basically two intersecting plots. One...
The reason I tried this new series was because of Colin Morgan, the actor who portrays Leo. I really enjoyed his acting in the TV series Merlin and was happy to watch him in another storyline. I otherwise would not have pursued Humans, but after watching almost all of Season One, I find it an interesting, unique series one usually does not find on TV. I feel like TV shows are falling into the same, old rut and the rare shows that actually are different, clean, and convey a message get cancelled (*cough, cough Forever!!!!*). Humans is not entirely clean (would advise parental guidance as they are some sexual scenes); however, the sexual scenes are there for a purpose that relates to the storyline and not just uselessly stuck in there for pure lust. There are various plots going on, which I find unpredictable. Most of the characters are not bland and there are messages of humanity, family, trust, etc. with each episode. I am pleased to hear Humans is renewed for a second season and hope...
A well done story on artificial intelligence with its multi-thread approach. Stories have been done before about "artificial humans" in such classics as "Blade Runner" and The Next Generation Star Trek episode "Measure of a Man", but this telling is fascinating because it is in a time parallel to our own and told from different views.
One story involves a husband who, tired of dealing with a chaotic home and a wife that is too busy for the family, decides to purchase a "synth" to sort out the domestic chores. The family name their new purchase Anita.
Another story involves an elderly retired academic who is told that he must give up his older and obsolete synth for a newer model that can take care of him better. But he has formed an emotional, almost fatherly, attachment to that older model which he tries to keep from being scrapped.
A still other story deals with a renegade band of synths and their mysterious human...
