European Rail Timetable: Summer 2014 (Rail Guides)
This is the succesor to the Thomas Cook European Train Timetable. The Cook company discontinued the legendary monthly timetable in 2013, but its former staffers purchased the right to resume publication. There are two versions produced, a monthly issue with all services in Europe and a twice annual Winter/Summer version intended for bookstore sales, with added pages on key trains outside of Europe (however the services outside of Europe are not shown in the same degree of detail as those in Europe). The Monthly Edition is obviously the most up to date source on the current sevices of European trains. The monthly edition also contains non-European pages, but each month only one region is covered. For example, the November issue has timetables for train services in Africa, as well as Europe. These are remarkable books. Each country has a useful map, with route numbers noted. There is a monthly news column and major cross-border international services are outlined in the first section of the detailed schedules in each issue. Details are included for all but a few minor branch lines and certain local commuter services and the timetable provides guidance on on-board services such as diners and sleepers. While this information can be patched together on-line it is much easier to use here. As a simple example, by using the maps in the European Timetable a traveler can construct optional routes. Computer driven train timetables almost always suggest the fastest route, but this is not necessarily the "best" choice for a traveler on a vacation journey. There is also very useful information summarizing the most scenic lines.
