I have had trouble germinating gourds in the past. This time, I soaked 4 seeds in water and 4 seeds in coffee. Both for 24 hours. Germinated them in a "plastic tented" soil tray in the house with an light bulb to warm them. Six out of 8 were up in 4-5 days! It was a tie between the coffee and the water. It hasn't been 10 days yet, but I'm impressed with the viability of the seeds and thought I share my method too. They are very hardy looking germinates.
I ruined about half of the seed by soaking it too long. By using a little hormone powder i succeeded in getting most of the remaining seed to sprout and now have about a dozen vigorous plants that are just starting to fruit. I live in the arid high desert and my soil is sand. I have a lot of voracious garden pests to deal with and I try to use only organic and natural methods of gardening. I am very happy with the seed. It seems hardy to the extremes here (one late freeze after seeds were planted) and endures a wide temperature range all through the growing season which includes long periods without rain, high wind, hail, blowing sand shredding the leaves and the afore mentioned pests.
I am excited to try these giants, as I have looked for the seed locally but have not found any. Now that I have found a source I will be coming back for more.
Few of these seeds sprouted and I only have 2 still growing. Gourds usually grow like crazy in my yard, but the 2 still growng are very small and will never have gourds before fall. Really disappointed, because I REALLY wantbushel gourds.
